Here's a summary of Steve Jones' training prior to his 2:08:05 WR in 1984.
I believe this training was first reported in "The Runner" magazine.

I've always thought Jones' training was quite a bit like that of Jim Peters, with less miles, and the addition of some repetitions for more speed.
I recall running an XC race and realizing that Steve Jones was in my pack. This was after his peak years, and he was coming back from a layoff (due to injury I think). Whenever I'd get a few steps I'd hear him cussing at himself and then he'd come steamin' past. Seriously tough SOB.
Steve Jones once ran a steeple, and by the third lap all the barriers were in splinters.
Steve Jones has ignited four marathon finish banners into flames as he passed through them.
Steve Jones locked himself out of his car at a road race, and pushed it home, twelve miles at 4:53 pace.
Steve Jones missed a water stop once, and kicked over the next fire hydrant he saw and got it that way.
Steve Jones had a car pull out in front of him, and casually changed the radio station on his way through it.
you woulda got destroyed.
