I'm not at all concerned about winning Regionals. Good teams treat is purely as a qualifying heat/preliminary. Last year they had a very strong showing at Nationals. Hopefully they repeat that last year but finishing 6th in Region and barely squeaking into Nationals is not good.

As for the Tar Heels, give them time. They are a very young team, and as a result had a very up-and-down season. They still should have made NCAAs with the talent on their roster, but things happen and a bright future lies ahead. I expected significant contributions from Rosenburg (redshirting?) and Milks (apparently no longer running?) but saw them in no results this season. It's hard to succeed with only 2 upperclassmen running. Looking forward to seeing what this group can do on the track.

Who knows whether this actually happened. Two posters have referenced this "incident". College athletics at the Division 1 level is serious business and coaches are going to try all sorts of motivational tactics to get their athletes to perform.
If this incident is true, it definitely does not reflect well on the coach but in the heat of battle lots of things happen. His team was 70 points outside of UVA (who qualified for NCAA's) so I don't think you can assign a ton of blame to the guy that finished 37th. He had two guys run about average/overperform a little (Shellberg, Deir), two guys underperform somewhat (Huryz, Abushock), one guy underperfrom a lot (Watchempino), and two guys underperform terribly (Cunningham (DNF) and Presson). As another poster mentioned, it's tough transitioning to 10k for high schoolers and he had 5 true freshmen running which gave him no room for error. At 6k he could probably sense things unraveling and was trying to motivate. Again, who knows if this is true.
Good luck to the SE teams at NCAA's. Hopefully they will all finish in the top 25.

As much as I realize my word on this site is about as reliable as Bill Clinton's, the story is absolutely true. I remember feeling awful for Evan. The look on his face when he was yelled at was sad to see... as I know how I felt at that point in the race and the last thing I would have wanted to hear was that I was f'ing over my team.

UNC Men were ranked 18th nationally coming in to the regionals and finished 9th. Easily the highest ranked men's team that did not make NCAA's(unless I'm missing something obvious) and they weren't even close.
UVA girls team lost All American Catherine White this year to injuries and won the SE Region with middle distance athletes. I think Vig has won a regional....

Vigilante is no better. Several people heard him chewing out his 5, 6, and 7 after the race and wouldn't let them cool down with the rest of the team. He told them "they blew it for everyone." I don't really think he was over the line in doing it. I'm merely mentioning this to prove that several coaches throw temper tantrums on bad days. This is big time college athletics. Watson isn't the only coach who reacts poorly to well prepared athletes shitting the bed.

The irony of the coaches yelling is that it wasn't the athlete who "blew it", it was most likely the coach.
Do you really think that the runners weren't trying?
Most likely, the runners were off that day. What makes a runner off? Most of the time something the athlete did leading up the race. Maybe they backed off too much, not enough, did speed too close/too far away,etc.
It's a shame that these coaches can't let their ego's get out of the way and maybe ask if they screwed up, not the athlete.

This comes up every time someone mentions the lack of men's scholarships at the University of Richmond. If those of you with personal knowledge about the Ivies want to chime in and correct anything in this post please do so.
It is true that the Ivies do not provide scholarships strictly based on athletics. However they do provide academic and need-based scholarships. As a highly recruited athlete, an Ivy will send you a letter of likely acceptance in October of your Senior year. The letter includes the amount of financial aid you will receive. The Ivies commit to providing 100% of the need the Office of Financial Aid determines is necessary. Therefore you know you will likely get in and the amount of money you will be given long before you even need to make a college choice. If you honestly believe that a person's status as an athlete doesn't affect the amount of money the school provides or whether or not a highly sought athlete has an edge in being accepted to the school, take a look at some of their football rosters and tell me all of those guys would get into an Ivy on their own academic merits.
Another thing that the Ivies have that Richmond does not is the draw of their reputation. Not to say that Richmond has a bad reputation, but we can all be honest that few institutions in the nation can match the great reputation of the Ivy League schools. This reputation and long lasting traditions bring other perks like big time alumni donations and reasonably sized athletic budgets (of the Ivies, only Dartmouth and Brown had a smaller athletic budget in 2010 then Richmond; though we need not compare any of those school’s budgets to the big time FBS football schools). Compare the Richmond facilities to the Princeton facilities and try to tell me again if the two should be compared in the same breath.
I do not want to take away from Princeton’s performance and great year thus far. I have a lot of respect for the Ivies and think more great runners should strongly consider going to academic institutions like the Ivies to have a chance to get a great education and a great opportunity to run at the top level of the college sport. However I feel it is absurd to compare Princeton to Richmond and say the Ivy’s “no scholarship policy” is even relevant to a program with zero scholarships like Richmond.

After the team dinner before NCAA's one year, our coach became upset as a couple of the team members hit on the waitress at the restaurant. That same trip he threatened to put one of the alternate runners on the first train back if he passed the coach again on our 10k course preview the day before the race(that 8 min. pace was blazing!) Later that night as we gathered for a team meeting our coach said "I've worked too hard for you guys to f... this up" The next day we finished in the top 10 after being an at-large selection. I don't know if the coach's speech motivated us or rallied us against him but the team did well. Coaches are emotional and have a lot of stress on them as well.
Vigilante was emotional as an athlete. I can't imagine his coaching style to be much different.
