Knut, I met Arne for several chats in Paris last year. He often mentioned Roscoe's name. Then one day Roscoe was there too. I think Arne said you were in the government. I have a program in front of me of the National AAU Marathon and Twilight meet that was held in Hayward field on Sunday June 6, 1971 (Moore first and Shorter second in the Marathon). The field of runners was awesome. Shorter told me that even a young high school kid named Salazar was in Eugene that weekend The mile had Ryun, Pre, Dave Wilborn and you and Arne. I was running the marathon so missed the mile. We could hear the loud cheers from the track as we approached the field. What can you tell us about that weekend? Who won?
Knut,
I think Roscoe lives up in the Seatle area. I will ask around and see what some of the old-timers in Eugene know about him. (Roscoe, I think, is from Spokane, Washington originally.) Tinman

If Salazar were in HS and at the meet in 1971, then it took him 7 years to graduate!

Salazar would not have been in HS at that time.

Tinman, you might want to start with Christy Davids, he works for Roscoe.

The twilightmeet in 1971 was a pretty big thing in Eugene. The mile was as always at that time, the main event. I'll tell you what I remember of the race - you have to take into account that memory for old men is a slippery thing.
Pre was in it, Arne was in it Steve Savage probably was in it. Jim was living in Eugene but did not run. I think he should have run, but something kept him out of the race. Dave probably ran but I do not know for sure.
The high-school kid around I would think must have been Paul Geis. I believe he came to Oregon that fall.
Pre made his move with one lap to go. I was not in shape to follow him but Arne went right with him and followed him down the backstraigt and into the curve. I was really watching the race between the two from behind. With 150m to go Arne just went into a sprint and the race was all over with. I think Arne ran 3.56 and Pre 3.58 something. I was 3rd in 4.00.0. This was my pr mile for 2 years I was a 4-min miler but not a sub-4miler.
In many ways the race was a replay of the race the year before when Roscoe beat pre in pretty much the same fashion.
That some night after the race Arne felt the achilles injury that slowed him down for 2 years.

Thanks for the info, Knut. Jim, Steve and Dave are listed in the program I have. So were Wes Smylie, Todd Lathers, Mike McClendon, Nils Emilsson, Rick Richie, Bob Rhen and the Kvaiheim brothers. and Mike Manley and Mac Wilkins. Not a bad twilight meet. I do remember seeing the Track and Field Nelsons and Joe Henderson there too, I think. The front page of the program has full length pictures of Prefontaine and Ryun. I thought Arne had said he had won that race. As you can see from my listing of Salazar, my memory is not too young anymore. I was 35 in that race in 1971.

Probably not Geis either, since Geis went to Rice before he transferred to Oregon.
Anyone you know here, Knut?

Geis didn't get to Oregon until '73 or '74 and, as malmo mentions, he came from Rice.

sorry to steal the question, i couldn't resist.
this thread has been almost all bowerman. interesting.
I knew you couldn't hold back, Walt. The picture tells more - another typical dreary Winter day in Hooterville.
You're joking right
Wes Smylie, Todd Lathers, Mike McClendon, Nils Emilsson, Rick Richie and Bob Rhen were all on the UoO team at the time. I do not remember if Mike M ran. he was in Eugene and we did some training toether but ery limited compaired to some years later.
Earlier in this tread somone asked for examples of Bill B tailoring programs to individual needs. Micke McClendon was a example ogf this. Because of an iinjury åroblem he cpould not train very much so Bowerman nursed him around and he did run 4.00,7 on a very limited schedule.

Fun to see that picture. Bring back memories.
Someone else mentioned who was in it and Pre, me and Mark F is definitely right. I do not think the guy who was third in the picture could have been Steve Bence though. Bence was an 800m runner. I do not remember him ever doing workouts on the track in the winter with. I'm not able to tell from the picture but my guess would be Scott Daggat.
I am trying to place this in time and I think it must be right before X-mas 1973. That winter I did my hard running either with Mike Manley or by myself. Most of my work just beeing solid runs. For this workout I decided to go training with Steve on one of his track sessions to see how I would handle that.
This was one of the good things about running in Eugene at the time. Even if you trained pretty much by your own schedule you could always jump in on a workout or two with the university guys. One workout I always liked to do with them was a 10 miler with four fast 1200m included and running at about 6 min mile pace in between.
As to my earlier answer on the 71 twilight mile I think Niels Emilson was doing 800 m pace setting. He was basically an 800 m runner.

KnutK, Walt had it correct. Steve Bence in third and way back is Lars Kaupang.
Here's a little twenty-first century trick for an old dog to learn (you remember those English idioms don't you?): Point to the photo/right-click/scroll to properties and the URL of the photo is given. Copy/paste to your web browser and, as the French say, WAH-LAH!
Or just click on this link:
Glad I already commented on old men and their memory.
Fun to see the pictures on the site the picture was from. They bring back memories - both good and bad of course.
As you understand I'm still capable of learning.

I think his name was John Parker!
Jack Batchelor was a great coach in Gaineville (and Raleigh) but doesn't get much credit. He's the one who got it all started, and most followed his workout plans.
