There is no way in Hell I believe that Benji ever broke 50 for a 1/4. I doubt that he could even approach 51 flat. I raced Benji plenty of times on the track and roads. He was not known as a kicker...at all.
Whether you want to believe it or not, I ran 50 point several times in HS for the 440 (on a clay track), and in my freshman and sophomore years in college I was under 50 in time trials a couple of times again for the 440. This was before I did any mileage to speak of; so maybe my legs hadn't begun to shift to mostly slow twitch fibers. I really don't know. I wasn't considered a kicker on the roads mostly because I hated waiting for the race to come down to a kick. That always seemed to be a risky way to run a race to me.
On the actual topic here; I don't know if that allowed me to be a better marathoner or not. I know of several good marathoners that were no faster than the high 50's and I suspect that that even a 60 second guy might have the tools to run sub-5 pace for a marathon if he had others tools like great endurance and a high lactate threshold. To be a good marathon is more about how you adapt to the long runs and how you body manages your fuel consumption. Raw speed can help, but efficiency helps more.
