NCAA Shot Put mismeasured? Should Florida have won?

Sorry Mike, NCAA T&F doesn't use the BCS committee nor allow NYAC members to bump up your track team. You have to win it on the field of play.

I'm have to read up on this...okay I know its a 4 foot personal best but what leads them to think it wasn't measured properly that day? If its a officals mistake shouldn't it be corrected?

Jaysus Fugging Ayatollah ! There wuz 100 fat old blobs on the infield slogging around huge ass video cameras and picture cameras. One of those retired high school track coaches / volunteers took the photograph/video of the toss. Weeer dah hayell iz ut ?

This is a cop out by NCAA Office. The officials may have not been NCAA officials, but many (most) of the head officials were USATF officials not from the Oregon Association. Why is that?...because USATF national sets up criteria that decides who gets selected to work these major meets. The criteria favors the old boy cronies, and the same ones are at most of the big meets. True, they aren't paid, but these outside cronies get nice hotel rooms and all their meals taken care of. Were they to use local OTC officials, who have proven themselves to be the best in the country, they could save on the hotel rooms for a start. But, I guess saving money isn't an issue when we have egos to satisfy. To hell with what is best for the athletes, we have old boys to pacify.

The only video I've seen (I think its on youtube somewhere) is from an angle where you cannot tell where the shot put lands and you can't even see the 20-meter line. If that was the video used for the appeal, I can see why they didn't uphold the appeal: not enough evidence to show error.

However, Mason walked out of the ring with his head hung a little low and no excitement whatsoever by him or anyone else near the ring. If that was indeed a 20.68m, I've never seen a person or competitors less excited by a 4-foot PR.

It's only been a few days since the debacle. UO T&F, UO Athletic Dept., NCAA T&F, and the USATF Oregon Association still has the email list of the high schools coaches, retired professors, and wealthy VIPs that were issued photo credentials and red & blue nylon vests, and was on the infield with video cameras and photo cameras recording the meet. Why don't they ask those wonderful volunteers to examine their footage and submit any content which would help us resolve this fiasco.

I haven't read this entire thread and if someone has already said this, I'm sorry. But one way to keep this stupid mistake from happening again is to quit using the stupid metric tape!!!!! I hate it when they put the distances or heights in metrics in the paper. I really can't see someone mistaking a 66' throw for a 70' throw on an English tape.

I grew up in the US too. Did you know the English use the metric system ?

Was this measured with tape or an laser/digital device?

Harder to misread a digital read out.

It sounds like many are saying they measured the wrong mark as opposed to mis-reading the measurement.

Who is this 'us' you refer to that labels this a 'fiasco'?

Does it cover those who were in charge at the meet who reviewed video evidence you haven't seen, talked to people involved who you haven't spoken with and made a decision on something which you weren't even present to witness?

There is NO Camera angle they have of the Shot actually LANDING on the ground. This whole thing is a disaster.

If they misread it by a meter the placing results are the same, as he was more than 1 meter ahead of third and, of course, fourth (the Florida guy).

Did they axe all the Fat Bods shooting on the infield ? Maybe they got it on video tape or on camera chips. You know, alls yous gots to do is type up an email to the list of Accredited Photographers and axe them. That's what Vin ought to do. It's his damn track and his damn field.

I hate when people post inaccurate information.

First, the USATF does not select the officials. The NCAA Track & Field Committee selects all head officials from a list of approved and highly trained professionals. These head officials are assigned to organize the crew put together from the host institution, and those officials may or not be USATF certified.

Second, why are we automatically assuming that there was a mistake? There is a question that perhaps a mistake was made, but we do not know. So those coming on here saying that Florida was robbed do not know that for a fact. Until I see some definite proof I will withhold judgement.

There have been enough incredible athletic achievements over the years by athletes that it is within the realm of possibility the Kansas kid could have just got ahold of one throw and put it out there.

No proof here. It's a message board discussion.

But the talk is about eye witnesses saying it looked wrong and the not so enthusiastic response of the athlete that just set a huge PR.

There was a billion cameras in the stands. There were 100 volunteer helpers on the field taking snap shots and vids for fan boy websites, college websites, grandma, coaches, and parents. T&FN had their $25/per picture volunteers on the field. Not to forget the professional camera operators from the Register-Guard, Oregonian, A.P., and CBS Sports.

Hah ! That's what you get for having OTC run the meet !
