Let him run all the big 4, boston,NY, chigago, london . this is what you get when you rely on one guy. he is not going to win any of those races. Poor guy, it is hard enough to win a marathon, it is even harder when people are waiting for you to turn water into wine. it happen one time it ain't gonna happen again

There are some runners who treat running as a business and their primary goal is to go where the $ is available. Hall is one of these runners. He has run 2 marathons every year for a long time (since 2007). However when runners chase the dinero it does not bode well for their long term development.

I am not sure what he is thinking. Does he think he will be like Haile G who progressively ran faster with time? If you look closely at Haile training the reason he broke 2:04 because he went back to 10km training in 2008 and he has done this throughout his "marathon" career.

Ryan Hall training plan doesn't appear to be very effective. I wonder if he thinks he reached his peak in 2008. His racing times and training goals reflect a training plan geared toward maintaining his "form" from 2008.

I don't see him taking a risk and pay cut to substantially improving his "form" down the road. It is disappointing for me to see all that talent chasing money $ instead of Olympic or World Championships. However, I am sure Hall is very pleased with his career or else he would have made other plans.

when you've run 2:03:59 and set 27 world records, as geb has, dnf's and 2:06's demand an excuse: there is a reason why he was not running to form.

Because the Boston Marathon is approaching, there is national attention on long distance running and marathoning in general. After Boston is over, that attention is gone until the next major marathon...which is Chicago. By announcing Ryan Hall running Chicago before Boston, when there is a heightened interest in the marathon, more people will be aware and more publicity will fall to the upcoming Chicago marathon.

Ritz won't run Chicago. He already indicated in his blog "Sure, another Hall-Ritz showdown would be cool, but wouldn't it be cool if we both won one as well?" Translation: they don't want to face each other. Ritz is almost for sure running New York at this point.

I am excited Hall will be in Chicago, though, because there's a good chance I'll be watching.

Translation: Ritz is playing the appearance money field, Hall signed first and got the most money in Chicago. Ritz will run NY because of the money.

Don't act like them being in the same race is some kind of Clash of the Titans. They still haven't proven they can beat the Kenyan or Ethiopian B team. The only people who care if they are in the same race are those two, and people who post here.

Thanks for the fix ... after London, which is a week after Boston, there's a little less than 6 months of buildup.

Meb announced he will run NYC today

Agreed , chasing dollars , its become that just that , agent tells him ," dollars are good" " short window to make big $$" , agent get his $$$ , 2-4 years of good marathon running athlete is toast

Wow guys, a few things worth mentioning here:

RYAN HALL DOES NOT CARE ABOUT MONEY. He lives his life for other people and aims to end global poverty. That is hardly the model of a greedy, selfish runner racing for cash.

Ritz has been taking running seriously lately, if you haven't realised. He will run the race that best suits his career. He has already mentioned that he wants a fast course.

Ryan's future: He will not do anything significant on the track since he wants to get in shape for Chicago after a shitty race at Boston. He will do mediocre at Chicago because of this. Repeat.

Define shitty. My guess is Hall gets top 5 in Boston just barely sub 2:10, not great, not bad. Tough to appreciate since he isn't dropping a sick time like London when he did mediocre competition wise but could still run 2:06.

I am very happy he is running Chicago, I really think he should have last year.

Compare these two, having similar PRs (2.06.17 and 2.05.47)

This does seem strange. From the outside looking in it seems as though Meb and Deena are hedging their bets. Bad performances at Boston and London would decrease their marketability. Have they resigned themselves to the fact that their training is not going well?

I really wish they would get back to the track. Kinda weird timing though, Meb should be 100% focused on Boston and not making other plans. I hope this doesn't mean he isnt in great shape and wants to tie up a pay day now rather than bomb in Boston and hurt his fall marathon value.

This shows this is a BUSINESS. This is Meb's and Deena's job and they have to protect their financial interests. By locking up for NYC now, Meb gets more money than if he bombs in Boston. NYC hedges its best but gets some publicity.

The mistake seems to be what if it isn't in Meb's best interest to run NYC. Say he does horribly in Boston and decides "hey I need a break from the marathon." Likely he won't know that until after Boston.

However, then he could just pull out of NYC. He no doubt gets some bonus for today's announcement and some bonus when he actually shows up to run, so today's announcement doesn't mean he has to run NYC, it just really means he can't run another fall marathon instead.

To make this announcement now, it tells me Meb is not focused on Boston. When it starts to hurt, he'll be thinking about NYC. Boston will be a disaster...
