I was in Berlin for the World Championships and the German crowd there were incredibly well-informed about the sport and it was a privilege to sit amongst a such a crowd of knowledgeable, educated and erudite spectators.
I suspect the average Chicago spectator would be as interested or as knowledgably about athletics as I am about nuclear physics.
They’d probably only come to life when they saw an American athlete who’d have to be clearly identified by a huge stars and stripes plastered on their backside.

While not a good sole reason to not have the games, it does show that having the games in the states doesn't help the standing of track and field much in the states.
