Obama would not go to Europe to seek the Olympics unless it was 100% sure that Chicago has already been selected.

America has bigger problems to deal with and the money could be spent in much better ways.

Besides, it's not like they'd have track meets in the Olympic stadium after the games would be over anyway.

Considering how backdoor and underhanded the Olympic process is, I have no doubt Chicago will be able to pull it off. Their politics is equally dirty. Look who they produced as president.

2016 is definitely no guarantee. Most of the nations top leader makes an appearance at the final IOC meeting to state their case. Our president is simply speaking for the nation. Chicago won the right to represent the USA before President Obama was elected into office (thank Bush for the nomination). I can guarantee he would have been making the same plea if any other city representing the USA.

This is political opposition for the most part, but I know first hand, and many other letsrun posters can easily see, it's becoming a racial issue also. Racial separation/ tension has always been American troubling reputation. African Americans, Mexicans, Muslims, Asians, or women of any race are rarely acknowledged as positive contributors to our nation...

Best of luck to Olympics & President Obama's re-election in 2012. However, I only see one as a near guarantee, because America WILL rise from the ruins thanks to our real American people and our current leaders.

Do me a favor. Live as a minority or a woman in this country before you speak. NCAA just celebrated its 100 year anniversary, but only 25-30 of them have openly allowed blacks & women. Read some post that have been written write here on the board. There is a TON of race issues being thrown out. 75% of republican's still think our president is Muslim as if that was a deadly sin... Face it, this country is not all white protestant men, and stay at home wives with no voice anymore...

The true problem is that there was not a racist vaccine delivered to the hateful many. Therefore it does not miraculously disappear because you're forced to live amongst us...

Its funny that your name is look closer when you point out things in face the facts' statement that are not there. All he said was that race relations are still a a major issue, he made no statement about white people being the only racist. Where do you get off making a statement like:

Playing the race card? I can't count the number of threads on here this forum that continually make racist comments against blacks, hispanics and arabs, and women. I concede to you that white people are not the only racist in this or any country, but regarding the history of our country, the oppression is apparent from start to present.

I, as opposed to the yanks up north, would love to host the olympics in america. All the chicago residents are being selfish and pessimistic(sp?). ITS THE FRICKING OLYMPICS, its about coming TOGETHER and uniting for a couple of weeks. Yall make me sick. I cant believe this is even a question whether we want the olympics or not, do you realize what kind of economic boom you would get from this as well as moral boost for a city, that in the residents eyes, needs an uplift. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for america and chicago as other world cities are quickly catching up to the 'american' standard and will pass us before long if we keep bitching and moaning about silly shit like this. I dont believe yall are actually bringing politics into this and the ol' boy system. This would brings a much needed influx of worldly ideas, money, people, exposition, and etc. to the 'heartland' of america.

Having the private investment go towards new businesses in the Chicago area could be a much better investment than a once and done economic stimulus of the Olympics.

Think about it, ok, local construction workers would enjoy steady work for a few years, but once the games are over, so are the jobs. If just a fraction of the Olympic budget would go to worthwhile start-ups, the economic effects would last much longer.

I really hope one of the other cities gets it, but it will probably be Chicago.

While I intend to agree with this, the issue isn't that simple. A lot of the dollars that will be available if Chicago wins the Olympic bid will only be available if Chicago wins the Olympic bid. That's the power of the rings--everyone wants to be attached to them in some way. So identifying potential negative effects if Chicago wins the right to host the Olympics is not as simple as looking at the amount of dollars that will be spent on the Olympics and then looking at what else could have been done with those dollars and identifying that as the opportunity cost.

That being said, I'm not sure whether I do or don't want the Olympics in Chicago; Rio has a pretty compelling case, too.

Fair enough, but in the same respect, if we look at past Olympic buget over-runs, the taxpayers won't be on the hook for billions of dollars if Chicago doesn't get the Olympics.
