The NY marathon will "double" as the USATF National Championships, so NOT COUNTING APPEARANCE FEES, in addition to the $250,000+ in open prize money, AMERICAN runners in NY will be racing for another $150,000 in American only money, that goes 15 deep!

So someone for someone like Hall; Appearance $$$ + Open $$$ + USATF Championship $$$ + Sponsor Bonus $$$ = a HUGE PAYDAY.

Any American running NY this year will most likely make twice what they could in Chicago.

SO for those who are calling Hall in idiot, you should learn how the sport works and what these guys do to make a living.

Ryan can definitely get the AR. You have to remember that he has raped every other american at the half marathon.

Geb is criticized because he is good enough to run against anyone, so he should run against everyone. Ryan is a very good american but he cannot run against everyone so he should go for time. 5 years ago ryan would have been beating everyone but now 2:06 might get you top 5.

there is no money in running. so if somebody offers you some, you take it.The only way NYC can get accomplished athletes to run the race is to pay them. We all know the course is slow, and there are no rabbits, so its all about the money.

If geb wanted a real race he would have taken a pay cut to let Wanjiru in, he didn't and presumably Berlin can't afford both.

I hope Wanjiru smokes the piss out of Gebs time in Chicago.

I am a 100% fan of Wanjiru.I however think his choice of chicago aganist berlin has nothing to do with Geb using dirty tricks aganist him( i.e asking the organisers to lock him out).I think this is purely Wanjiru's choice; you might have noticed that he failed to turn up for a half marathon race in japan last month that race was won by Ngatuny .His reason was fatigue.Iam told by reliable sources that wanjiru took a very long well deserved break after his london victory and has only recently started training seriously.I think he has realised that he cannot be at peak shape in time for berlin therefore his next best option is chicago.I do not think he will be able to train sufficiently enough and be in record-breaking fitness level though.Infact he might actually be beaten by someone like evans cheruiyot in chicago.

The situation with the marathons is similar to how professional boxing brought about its demise. When my grandfather (RIP) was a kid, there were 8 weight divisions and every kid knew who the champs were. Guys like Gene Tunney, Benny Leonard and Georges Carpentier were known by all sports fans.

Shifty promoters knew that "world championship" fights made the most money, so they needed a strategy so that virtually every fight was a "world" champsionship. What did they do? They simply created new organizations; each with their own world champions. Thus were born the WBO, WBC, IBF, etc....

In the end, there were 12 weight divisions for 4 different "federations". Thus, there were 4x12 =48 "world champions". And every fight was a "world championship". Guess what? Fans stopped caring, and boxing was effectively dead in the late 20th century.

In running, we need to limit the venues and force top people from ducking each other. It's the fans who suffer when the top marathoners spread themselves around so they don't have to lose. The same goes for sprinters; one guy runs the 100m while the other guy runs the 200m. This is chickenshit.

I just love it how a bunch of 2:06 guys how up at Boston end up running slower than Rodgers like 100 years ago... kinda sad how much of the human element of marathoning has been taken away by races that they might as well just run on oversized tracks
