I think that a lot of the "hatred", as you call it, toward Metcalf has to do with all of us seeing his smug attitude after the Washington women did so well in XC. Everyone knows that Kelley MacDonald-Strong was the one responsible for their success, yet Metcalf tried to take all the credit. I think that most of us hope that Kelley moves on to a program where she can get credit for her hard work. What did Metcalf do with his Distance/XC people before Kelley joined the staff? Nothing, except injure them and run them into the ground. Now he wants all the credit for a group of good runners assembled and trained by Kelley. He got his contract extension to 2011, why can't he put his ego on the shelf for awhile?
as a washington native it has been frustrating to see guys go to UW, run 3:45/ 14:00 their first two years, and then either drop off the planet, get injured, get forgotten about.

david bazzi, eric garner, abbott, and brown are the only guys in the last 10 years that have really done anything on a national level.
washington is loaded with male distance talent and it either goes to UW and doesnt do well, or knows good and well to stay away from UW.
what he did with the women is great. and it doesnt surprise me. he seems like a great recruiter from all his flotrack interviews and could sell GM stock for 20 a share.
