Unfortunately it will be a kickers race. Going out slow and continuing negative splits. Rupp should drop out by 2 miles. Chelanga will finish first in 13:48
way below race expectations

FWIW, Rupp's 7:44.69 3000 at BIG is worth:
13:17.15 - 2008 IAAF Scoring tables (7:44.68 = 1148 points)
13:25ish - Purdy
I think in this case Purdy is closer than IAAF. Rupp is clearly better at longer distances, though, so I'd expect a better quality performance at 5,000 than 3,000, all things being equal (which they almost never are).
The AR would look to be a bit of a stretch based on his BIG 3000, but not out of the question by any means.
That 13:20 by Padilla was run at
on the old wooden Garden track. 34 laps for the 5K. Even if Rupp runs 13:19, I still think Padilla's record is more superior. Someone would have to run under 13:15 IMHO, for the record to truly merit being broken and superior to the current standard. It would be fun to see them race a 5K at the Garden. They would have an advantage with the new modo surface, but it would still be 34 laps to the 5K. Interesting to think about.

A couple things that could be in Rupp's favor over BIG. He almost didn't race there due to illness, so possibly his strength is up since then. Also, that was the first time he locked horns with the Ethiopians like that, and this time around he might have a little more confidence and less "respect". My guess is that was a bit of a breakthrough race for Rupp, really mixing it up with some top west africans. And as you said he does get better as the distance goes up. He's a macine over 25 laps outdoors, so 25 laps on this track might suit him well.
One interesting point, in 2007 he ran 7:54 for 3K and he's just improved that by 10 seconds while perhaps not at 100%. That would suggest that he's 16-20 seconds faster than his 13:38 from indoors in 2007. Which puts him right near 13:18-13:22 range. Obviously all things are never even or consistent, but that is certainly the range I bet he's capable of.
It'll be interesting to see how Chelenga races, his strategy in cross country was certainly not to sit and wait so maybe he'll get it moving early. I assume there will be a rabbit.

It is impressive, it'd be even more impressive if PED's weren't as rampant as they were when he set that mark. Not saying it's his fault of that he was dirty for 100% sure, but considering that they were still viewed as a supplement at that time and the greatest coaches and athletes were all about it, it's a little hard to swallow.
And before anyone gets all angry or defensive, that's just the way it was.
It'll be a great race. This meet is listed on Oklahoma State's schedule. Too bad Fernandez isn't running here, it would have been the perfect setting to take down the World Junior record.
5000 meters
12:49.60 World – Kenenisa Bekele
13:20.55 American – Doug Padilla
13:20.40 Collegiate – Suleiman Nyambui
13:32.90 World Junior – Ismael Kirui
13:32.01 Top World Time 2008 – Alistair Cragg
13:45.16 Top US & Collegiate 08 – Josh McDougal
according to the UW start list, he isn't running the 3K at Washington either.

Hmmmm...
Tyson would be a lot closer to OSU than UW...
He had a lot of travel last weekend...
You don't suppose...nah, we couldn't be that lucky (that he'd be a late entry in this race at Tyson instead of UW), could we?

Perhaps, it would make more sense for several reasons. One being if he is taking world juniors seriously than a 5K with less travel involved seems a much better choice than a 3K with more travel.
Or maybe he's going to run at College Station in a week, to get used to that track and have 2 weeks between races.
Should be warming up in about an hour, think there's an AR or CR in the legs today?
13:17 for Daba, 13:18.7 for Rupp
Rupp's never had an AR obviously, so that would be a big deal. He's getting close to running at that level, though I still expect 10k outdoors will be the first AR he reaches.

"Daba goes, Rupp hangs. This is amazing!!! New American record. Rupp gets second Daba 13:17.89. Rupp 13:18.12

Wow biatches, I'm off to Vegas! Check the time of my post!
the person who predicted it like a champ was the guy that said 13:17 and 13;17 on the 10th of Feb now that guy gets props.

That's true.

well, I guess the brojos will slide this somewhere in the middle of their write up and title it as Rupp is Bridesmaid for week two and focus more attention on Chelenga despite the fact that it is Rupp's AR, Rupp's CR, a bigger PR for Rupp, and he was the one who stuck his nose in it.
Brojos, this guy holds a host of records, now including an AR. Time to start paying a little respect to one of our best long distance runners.
beauty race by rupp...the AR's gunna get lowered at ncaa's too
if rupp, german, chelenge, and possibly derrick dip under 13:25 would that be the overall faster american 5k ever?
not sure if it will go that fast though, Rupp knows he can outkick Chelenga so unless Sam makes it fast it will probably go closer to 13:30-13:35 pace with a big last 1200. Derrek & Puskedra will be hard pressed just to hang through 3,000 and who know's what German's doing, he's not on the list for the 3K tomorrow and he will need a 5K qualifier.
He may be scrapping it to prepare for world cross.
