Lagat has worked so hard all his life and people are starting to consider his Gold medal a dirty Gold Medal. Let us give him a break. After finish over and over again I dont think it warrants a DQ, but my advice to Lagat, win absolutely cleanly so no one can question your abilities.

Anyone who thinks that Lagat impeded Kipchoge should go back and watch the finish of the 2003 Paris WC 5000. Kipchoge, on the outside, squeezed El G, on the inside, very tightly indeed.

Lagat did not impede Kipchoge when he passed him and went into lane one. After that, it is the responsibility of the trailing runner to go around the leader. Once established in lane one, the only way the leader can foul the trailing runner is by willfully drifting in or out to block progress, and Lagat never left his lane at the end.

I saw that too, Lagat should NOT have drifted back to the left lane legitimately or illegitimately. He should have stuck on his Lane without cutting back and won Like Yego did. We would not have this thread and Lagat's win would be totally untainted.It looks like there are some people doubting Lagat's ability against his former country men.To solve this debate why dont the two race for some big purse with K. Bekele in the race too. Kipchoge would win hands down. He learnt his lesson from that race. Who would like to bet?

If you study the video over the the last 5-10 meters of the OSAKA 2007 5000 finals, IMHO, Bernard Lagat impeded Eliud Kipchoge from progressing with his accelaration which is contrary to the IAAF Competitions Rules in particular Rule 163 Section 2 on Obstruction.

In all fairness if Lagat did not cut in front of Eliud Kipchoge in the last five meters, the results could have been different. It would have been a photo finish like the 800 meters and results could be different.

Watch the video in slow motion and give your unbiased opinion.

The Kenya Track Federation(?) might have had a legitimate case if they had decided to pursue this issue.

It is just a matter of fairness, nothing personal against Bernard Lagat or the USA.

i say that lagat employed perfect tactics. As far as positioning goes towards winning a race, i dont think you can play it more perfect than he did. quit your jabbering about it being illegal, it looked pretty clearly legal to me.

Compared to how Haile beats Tergat(1996 and 2000), Lagat's win is a dirty win. Although is does not appear as a DQ act, you cannot compare it with the cleanliness of Haile's wins over Tergat. That is what you call true and fair racing. Haile gave Tergat all the chance to win, but Tergat could not make a comeback and pass. In the case of Osaka 2007 5K finals, although Lagat is not obligated to stick on his lane, Lagat closes the door on Kipchoge.1500 Observer you have a point although it seems majority of the people do not agree with you I do to some extent, but not to the degree of DQ.My conclusion;If Lagat took the same path as Haile and stuck on it, Kipchoge was picking up and would force Lagat to pick up too and we would have see the real race.Kipchoge wins.

Yes I am a track runner, 800/1600, so these races are even tighter on a regular basis than a 5k. What I'm saying is, IF Kipchoge felt he was cut off, and wanted to make case of it, I could see his point, and from what I've viewed, he might be justified in that course of action. But if he doenst feel there was any foul play, then everything stands as is. Only Kipchoge can really know if he was cut off to the point that it affected his race. I only read the OP's post, but I have to say this is ridiculous. Lagat won and would have won whether he impeded Kipchoge or not, and it doesn't look like he did to me. In fact, it looks like Lagat realized victory and Kipchoge realized defeat at about the same time over the last 10 meters or so.

Either way, go F yourself. Quit being a little bitch. It'd be one thing if he tripped him or cut him off enough to cause any stumbling, but you are just trying to bring up shit where there is none.

Lagat wasn't even pushing for a good bit of the last 100m because he knew he had Kipchoge beat. He tooled him. He slowed down a little too much so it looked like he obstructed him a bit, but if Lagat had just powered home, it would've been clear Kipchoge had no chance. Look at how easily Lagat passed him. Thus, I don't think Lagat should've been DQed.

There is no way that a DQ would be called there.

Kipchoge needed to make a real effort to get by and maybe step on Lagat in the last few meters.

He conceded the victory.

Lagat took a nice gradual angle. Good veteran tactics really.

This is world class racing. Not high school where a relay team gets DQ'ed because one member wore half tights and the other 3 wore shorts.

Charge: Did Lagat impede Kipchoge's progress by obstruction?

Guilty: 15 Votes

Not Guilty: 29 Votes

The "Not Guilty" verdict has been passed in the court of Letsrun.com. All charges against Lagat have been dismissed and this case is considered closed never to be re-opened forever and ever.

Lagat can now enjoy his Gold medal in peace until when he might meet Eliud Kipchoge in the 2008 Olympics to be held in Beijing, China to decide who is the Olympic Champion.

Yeah considering how fresh Lagat was for that 5k final I bet he will lose... and he always loses to KB...

Should not have drifted back to the left lane? Show me in the rules where it states you aren't allowed to change lanes in a race? Anybody whose smoking the field the last 100m has every damn right to change lanes if he so wishes. Obstruction is only valid if the leading runner, without a reasonable doubt, knows that the other runner is coming up behind him in the following lane. Lagat may have ASSUMED but no evidence shows absolutely that he knew Kipchoge was coming through that lane. For all we know he moved into lane one to give Kipchoge room for lane 2...sounds unlikely but you can't rule it out especially if all the other people with sand in their vagina are bringing up ridiculous arguments as well.
