Should Bernard Lagat have be Disqualified in 5K finals for Obstruction based on IAAF Rule 163.2

I tend to agree with you that Lagat's win was not legit. I have not seen many people discuss it, but I am still a Lagatfan. I wonder what Kipchoge thinks about his villagemate's tactics and win.

If you study the video over the the last 5-10 meters of the OSAKA 2007 5000 finals, IMHO, Bernard Lagat impeded Eliud Kipchoge from progressing with his accelaration which is contrary to the IAAF Competitions Rules in particular Rule 163 Section 2 on Obstruction.

In all fairness if Lagat did not cut in front of Eliud Kipchoge in the last five meters, the results could have been different. It would have been a photo finish like the 800 meters and results could be different.

Watch the video in slow motion and give your unbiased opinion.

The Kenya Track Federation(?) might have had a legitimate case if they had decided to pursue this issue.

It is just a matter of fairness, nothing personal against Bernard Lagat or the USA.

I dont believe any objection was raised by Kenya so the rule did not come into play.

If they had raised an objection I cant see the outcome would have been any different.

The athletes themselves did not appear to have any problem with it so no harm no foul I guess.

I thought at the time that Lagat had cut him up, but Kipchoge seemed remarkably unfazed, despite practically bumping into him at the end. I think Lagat was far enough ahead that Kipchoge could have cut right without losing much.

Kenya Track have done it before. Against Wilson Keter. They are always against their athletes running for other nations. Infact they imprisoned Shaheen (formerly Stephen Cherono) for trepassing into Kenya.

Are you saying that a World Championship Bronze Medal from a US born Citizen (Teg's bronze) is more valuable than a World Championship Gold Medal won by a former Kenyan and New American Citizen(Lagat's Gold)?

This world is crazy.

From the side it looks like Lagat is in the middle of the first lane but from the front you can see Kipchoge had room to get by. Since Lagat was in front however before kipchoge moved up he is not obliged to move over for him. No self respecting world class runner would have disputed that particular finish.

How about when webb shoved over lagat with 90 meters to go in the 1500? Those moves are still considered part of fair racing; they didn't cross the line.

Technically no - As in the case of a drugs test, but in a case like that where nobody in the race is claiming it to be unfair there really is no incentive to create a problem by disqualifying anybody or even publicly looking into the footage.

He had enough room about 40-50 out when he could have switched sides, instead he held he inside and got close right at the end. He said that his tactics were wrong over the last 50m, maybe this is what he means.

INHO, Lagat smoked Kipchoge. If it did happen, and I didn't notice it, it wouldn't be significant to alter the outcome fo the results of the race. I consider this discussion closed. Just kidding.

How about the kenyan that blatantly SHOVED Webb coming off the final turn in the 1500? If that wasn't illegal, there's no way Lagat's win in the 5k was.

Kipchoge actually gives Lagat a slight push forward right at the end.
