Michelle Sikes, in addition to her very fast win, is a Rhodes Scholar majoring in mathematical economics. Even interned at the prestigious American Enterprise Institute.

I'm bummed. Really wanted Huddle to end her collegiate career with this win. 15.16 is a race though...damn
Ya, I really wanted Huddle to end it with a title too.

a super 5k for ACC
what are the fastest 5k times? I thought they said she didn't get the ncaa record, but I couldn't find a faster time.
I really wanted Sally Kipyego to win the historic double and if she didn't run the 10000m she would have won the 5000m. MORE IMPORTANTLY the person who beat Sally Kipyego is AMERICAN!!!!!!!!! Gotta check and see if that's an American Collegiate Record.
If results are true, Michele Sikes destroyed the old 5000m American Collegiate Record!
I wanted Sally to win the double too. Not only did she have the 10k, but also the 5k prelims before that. That is a lot of racing. Sally still did great for not being as fresh as her competitors. Sikes definitely EARNED the win with those last few laps. It was a very exciting race. Sally is still my hero. Wreck 'em Tech!

The first sentence is impressive stuff; interning at AEI tells you more about (political) orientation than quality -- adds absolutely nothing to the Rhodes Scholar, maybe even detracts a bit (its my field, so I know some on this score).
I'm sure there are many inspirational athletes in the field, but Sally Kipyego was my pick to win. (...Great article on Sally's dream of becoming a nurse on the school's website.) it seems like Kipyego ran a great 2nd place effort.
People always want to blast the Kenyans that run in the NCAA because they "have an unfair natural advantage", etc., etc. My guess is that Sally's life has been far less easy or sheltered than many in the pack. If nothing else, coming to a new country and doing school in your non-native language while meeting the demands of your sport is no easy feat.
that said, I think many of the runner's that made it to NCAAs probably have some pretty amazing stories. It has been mentioned earlier that Michelle Sikes is a Rhodes Scholar.
I like Julia Lucas a great deal as a person and athlete and would have liked to see her win a title on her way out. I think she has good things to come in her running future, however.
wow, what a phenomenal race! I remember a few years back when the winning time was 16:40 or so (granted, not great conditions that year, but still). basically, no one wanted to lead and so the race went slow and ended up a sprint to the finish--strategic, but pretty lame to watch.
anyone know the rest of the results
Just the idea of Michelle as a neoconservative makes me laugh! Nothing to fear on that count- she's just not ideological and AEI has some great econ people.
Anyway, Michelle has always been tough but her progress is absolutely unbelievable. (Just take a look at the change in her 5k pr over the last 3 years!)
A few years ago, at a home meet, she ran her first steeplechase. Michelle fell on the very first water barrier and came out just laughing. How she managed to run a school record while laughing and smiling the rest of the way I will never know, but that is Michelle in a nutshell.
Gratulerer Michelle!
GREAT run! but don't put the AEI internship on your resume.
Most people probably figured it wouldn't be too far of a stretch for Sally to win both races this year, that is why I wanted her to lose. If that makes me a bad person so be it, but I enjoy watching teams that bring in talent from overseas to win titles, lose. Thankfully, there was a great race by another great runner who has developed so much since arriving at college.
Congrats Michelle.
What are Michelle's plans for running next year? Won't it be hard for her to train well during her graduate studies at Oxford? Correct me if I'm wrong, but the town of Oxford won't exactly offer her same level of quality training and racing opportunities that Wake Forest did.
what is the women's 5k collegiate record? who has it? an article said that Michelle got the meet record and #2 all time women's collegiate time

Better to try and then fail, than to fail to try. 2 GREAT CHAMPIONS duked it out.
Kipyego strikes me as gracious, eloquent and rather attractive in this interview:

She has a new fan for sure.
What an inspiring world class performance from Michelle. As with wejo and others, I literally came out of my seat after Michelle came back that third time on Sally and blasted past her for good. Best NCAA 5k race I had seen before was Fleshman beating Flanagan in 2003 in meet record time- this one much better. And I wanted Molly to grab an NCAA title also, but no one was going to beat Michelle. Just to think she's only 22 and within 30 seconds of the drug cheat's time. Eye yi yi.
The Nationals this year and Trials next year are going to be AWESOME for the women as well as the men with all these great 5k athletes under age 27...and capable of running sub 15.
American men regularly now run sub 13 5k and sun 27 10k but marathons stuck at 2:07. What gives?
