The reason Lindgren didn't compete beyond 26 was that he could not compete beyond then. I don't mean he was physically unable to run or anything, I just mean his performances dropped off and he simply could no longer keep up with the best even in the US whereas just 9 years earlier he was beating the best in the world. Nor could he match performances of previous years. He was used up by 26.
you are oversimplifying a very complicated life. Gerry was in the top few Americans for the 5k, still, in 1971, when Pre was the top guy. If the professional road racing circut would have been around in 1971, I have no doubt the Lindgren would have been 'recharged' and made a nice living hammering the daylights out of the roads back then.
