Rupp's splits from his 28:28 in Australia

You know why it seems like a lot of people don't care? It is because a lot of what you 'claim' above is just speculation. You have no idea what Galen's relationship is with Knight. The NCAA investigated Rupp and has still allowed him to run. As someone posted before, many collegians have traveled abroad on their own dime to compete unattached. As long as he is taking a full courseload, paying for his own travel, and training under the guidance of someone approved by the University's athletic department, I don't see how he's doing anything wrong.

I agree that the coaching situation seems kind of shady, but that does not just happen at Oregon--there are a lot of college kids who work out with post-collegians in separate sessions. It's commonly done in Boulder, San Francisco, and Madison, and I wouldn't be surprised to hear of it happening in more places.

I want to ask you though--what does the word 'legacy' mean to you? Do you think that Ohio State's football legacy has been ruined because some clown named Clarett lied to the cops, dropped out of school, and ruined his potential career?

U of O has accomplished so much as a program that whatever is happening with Rupp/Vin/Salazar is not going to ruin the legacy. Everything that Bowerman, Dellinger, Hayward, and even Martin built, and careers of athletes like Chapa, Divine, Moore, Pre, Wilkins, Davis, Salazar, and many others have built will not be diminished because of some suspicions that a few message board posters have.

Exactly my thoughts. I received all kinds of Nike gear in college for free. Schools have sponsorships with shoe companies, get over it. Ever been in the UW track lockeroom? They have Adidas shoes and shoeboxes stacked all over the place. These kinds of things happen within the rules at many campuses around the country.

who here thinks his future is worthy of these luxuries? do you sincerely expect him to be toeing the line in a few years at a major championship with the intent on winning?

By a major championship, I take it you mean the Olympics or WC, and I don't see him winning anything like that. If he were to try to do so, he would have to have a lot more speed than he does right now, and by speed, I mean natural raw speed. He's ran, what, 3:45? There are guys already his age in Africa running 3:35, sub13, and sub27. So, no, I don't think he will ever be a contender to win a world championship or olympic gold in the 10k or below. I don't know about the marathon, seems everyone is heading that way nowadays. Who really cares that heis getting all these luxuries though? I mean, how does it directly, or even indirectly, affect anyone else not in a positive way? Rupp is still young and although he may not have the early development of a lot of Africans, it doesn't mean he can'tg go sub 27 or sub 13 someday.

There's only one way to find out, and that is what they are doing. Going for it. A lof of jealous people would like to stop him, but he IS going for it all.

You'll see some ups and downs in his career because they redline it, they go for it.

Don't think through your mind, you've accepted defeat and that you will never be great. Most of us have. He hasn't, and he doesn't have to.

Galen Rupp, 28:37 for second place at the 2007 NCAA Outdoor National Championship.

A little off the subject, but is it true that Galen Rupp is something like the grandson or great grandson of legendary U. of Kentucky basketball coach A. Rupp? One of my running friends said he had heard this too.

Rupp is my year, and while I've never had the distinction of running against him, he really is not that talented, he does work very hard and has alot of really good people working with him and for him.

that said, Rupp's performance I would say is equal to a 27:45 in the summer, given two conditions:

1) he continues training and reaching several milestones running 13:25 or faster and breaking 3:57 for the mile or its equivalent

2) he gets in the right racing condition to perform well. Will it be cardinal? maybe. Could it be the NCAA championship? maybe. Could it be National Champs or Worlds? maybe.

Telling time this far out is hard to do, but from here it seems he is capable of 27:40-5 if he continues to improve as he as and reaches his milestones. Although at NCAA's he was really disapointing. Although for now, I wouldn't read to far into this race.

Will Rupp break 27 or 13:10 one day? who knows. but he does have A VERY long way to go and no one should doubt that.

considering the peak for most guys is at 25-27, he can certainly be very good, although right now I would rule the world record out of the question, unless of course it is rescinded. And so is Gebs. And so is Tergat's, Korir's, and Hissous'.

So basically you mean he has no chance in hell of breaking a world record or winning a medal...ok thanks we already knew that.

Ritz, Webb, and Cababa are better.

A few things...people say how can he improve a minute in the 10k in 6 months?

1) a 2740 is 28 seconds not a minute

2) He doesnt need to improve by 48 seconds..only needs to run 48 seconds faster. BIG difference. He was probably in 2810 shape right now at least. He ran in less than ideal conditions, with not a whole lot of time to adapt to having flown their, winning by alot...and still ran 2828 with a huge negative split. Obviously hes more fit then 2828.

3) Another 6 months of HEALTHY training with our best athletes and facilities can do wonders...IE 2004 or 2005 seasons for him

4) his 1358 was pace work not a race effort to those not intelligent enough to still realize that after this race

I was there last night and to be honest conditions were close to perfect for the last half of the race (except for a bit of water on the track). It was raining early but many people were able to push out PBs in the shorter events on the night (particularly 1500) and the wind dropped by the time the 10,000 started. If a comment is to be made on race conditions it would probably be that he had to run a long way by himself.

He looked impressive and is obviously pretty tough. Fantastic run also by our own 20 year old, Dave McNeill, running 29.05ish for 4th.

I would say that Galen is a very talented individual that also happens to run a lot. NOT AS talented as Alan Webb, but talented.

Rupp is phenomenally talented who trains quite intelligently hard and has great focus and a great supporting cast. Think Hansons on a micro-management level.

By the way, Salazar did not break 28-minutes while at Oregon (28:06), so I have to believe that Salazar sees the potential mightily in this young lad if he ran 28:15 as a JUNIOR!

Also, no major secret here, but Rupp will make a sub-2h10' attempt in the marathon after his senior year...
