Rupp's splits from his 28:28 in Australia

Thanks for the recap! Very solid run by Rupp.

A friend of mine lives in Melbourne and he said there have been fires surrounding the city and the smoke has been pretty bad. He said he can't imagine those being good conditions for running. That makes 28:28 that much more impressive.

So he ran 14:25/14:03? Wow. Impressive.

yes. the weather was rubbish. no doubt your young american is worth a 28.15 on the right day.

its december and he ran that time in bad weather, essentially solo. i think we are looking at 27:40-50 this year if he can stay healthy. i predict he wins the 10k at ncaa's.

Wasn't this already covered? Also, 27:40? Come on now. Do you think good weather and competition will make almost full minute difference in his time?

Why don't we remember that this is just a kid and what a great opportunity it must be to race in Australia at the infamous Zatopek Classic! Perhaps all of you should learn from Rupp in that if you work extremely hard, believe in your Coach (Salazar, much like Webb & Razcko), great opportunities will come forth.

Many of you are not aware that the NCAA is all about athletics and sport for enjoyment, in assisting the student-athlete lead a more balanced lifestyle. If Rupp is having a great time, so be it. If Rupp paid his way to Australia, ran unattached on his own dime, and had fun so be it.

NCAA Athletes have been doing this for years, myself included, in my prime, as during XMas break I traveled to Mexico to compete in a high-level meet, unattached, on occasion.

Let the kid run. Period. And shame on all of you that would criticize someone trying to reach his or her potential and capitalizing on their past and present successes or fortunes.

I'm not sure infamous is the correct word choice. Infamous implies a negative conotation of noteriety, while famous simply means well known in a positive light. Maybe you meant that instead?

one his family has some money...two they aren't paying for college or anything so they have the college fund to use to let him run where ever he wants.

Also there is no one on this board that would not take the opportunites, stop being jealous.

I added up the splits and I got 14:22.32 for the first 5k, which means he must've gone 14:05.86 for the second 5k, which is very impressive, especially considering how just a week or two ago he went 13:58, but I guess that was on an indoor track and with no rabbits. The McMillan calculator (which I know isn't a good measuring stick half the time) matches a 28:28 10k with a 13:44 5k, and my guess is that right now, Rupp is capable of running about 13:46 - 50 for 5k. I just hope him and his coaches peak him right and for the right races and don't burn him out on too much racing and/or overtraining. I think he'll be able to go sub 28:00 in 2007.

If you would have read the book: "Bowerman and the Men of Oregon"; you would know that U of O has been taking distance runners down to New Zealand/Australia for over 40 years at this time of the year. Bowerman started taking them down there in the late 50's/early 60s.

Except he ran with a nike jersey on. Not an oregon one.

How long before he appears in a nike commercial running laps with the other Oregon Project members?
