Hand-timing is all BS, it's never correct. Never, EVER, believe the times of a sprint if someone says it is hand-timed.

Football coaches always inflate their kids 40 times that way. So kids that would actually run 5.0 would be told they were hitting it in 4.5 or something like that.

Right, but I don't think it was football coaches who were timing Johnson when he broke the record. No one ever said hand-timing is perfect, but I do place full trust in the officials at the Olympics that they weren't off by nearly half a second when timing the 200.

have to say that Matt deserves it since his personal best

of 10.03 came way back in 1998. Hes 24 now. Time will tell.

African Americans are not genetically the same as West AFricans. Most AFrican AMericans have other ethic groups mixed in with their heritage. Also unless you can trace the heritage of the individual athlete I find it interesting that they can tell which African AMericans are descended from which part of the continent.

USC's Howard Drew was the first great black sprinter, he was also the first black to hold a sprint WR when he ran a 9.6 in 1914. He made the 1912 Olympic team but an injury did him in. He was the roots to the tree.

The 1930's saw Eddie Tolan,Ralph Metcalfe,Eulace Peacock and the great Jesse Owens emerge on the scene and things were never the same again.

America however was very familiar with the great black athlete since Jack Johnson was the heavyweight champion of the world prior to 1920.

Then along came Jackie Robinson in the 40's and........

Black athlete's are simply built different it really is nothing more than that. Those differences are why sports that require speed,quicks and agility favor them.

It ain't got a damn thing to do with culture/enviornment or anything other than they just have the gift.

Actually the first great black sprinter was John B Taylor, the first African-American athlete to represent the USA in international competition. He ran the 400m and the 400 leg in the SMR at the 1908 Olympics, incidentally the anchor on that relay was Mel Sheppard, the last American to win the Olympic 1500. Taylor was the first African-American gold medallist by virtue of the relay. Only the gold medal was awarded in the 400m as the race was stopped due to a foul by one of the US runners and rerun the next day, the remaining US runners did not run as a protest! Taylor died of typhoid later that year and his funeral was apparently a major event, covered by the NYTimes as well as local papers. (Acknowledgements to Dave Johnson, Penn Relays Office)

John B.Taylor was not a "great" runner he was merely one of the top four 400 men in the US at that time. Now if he had won the gold in the 400 or ran a world record that would be different. Howard Drew was the top 100/200 sprinter in American in his day. He won the Oly trials! Big difference between a double WR holder than just the member of a 4x4 relay. Kinda irinic to be honest since I've used Taylor many times as a trivia qustion concerning the first black to medal in Oly competition. However "great"...nope!

women & the men. Shouldn't all women of Western African

Heritage have the same edge as the men from there do.

A white woman(Zhanna Block) won the World Championship as

the worlds fastest woman in 2001. She is favored to win

it again. Another one of the favorites is Thannou of

Greece. Explain this because we know with white men, that

they are not even close to being the fastest man!

So in America the belief of black supremacy in speed related events is just as strong with the women as the men.

Women in foreign countries just appear more interested in track and training that women in the stats.....so!

I'm not to keen to dive into this debate, but I will defend Penn's John Baxter Taylor, who was in fact quite a bit more acclaimed than Brutal would imply.

Taylor was the IC4A champion as a freshman in 1904, when the IC4A was considered the national championship. His time of 49.2 was the same time as Harry Hillman's who won the 1904 Olympic gold, and Taylor's mark was in yards and therefore 2 meters extra. It was also a meet record.

Although he took 1905 off, he would return with the change in coaching in 1906. In 1907, Taylor's best year, when he was a Veterinary Student at Penn, he won the 440 again in a tremendous 48.8, another meet record. Later, he also won the AAU title, making him the US champion and one of, if not the, best quarter-miler in the world in that year.

In 1908 Penn won the mile relay at the Penn Relays, and Taylor won the IC4A 440 again, making him one of a precious few that have won 3 times. Taylor would then of course be a member of the winning Olympic sprint medley team that also featured his Penn teammate, Nate Cartmell. He never got to run the individual because the US boycotted the final, and Wyndham Halswelle of GB won in a walkover.

anyway, the question might be why Caucasian distance running, especially in the US, improves at such a smaller rate than their African counterparts. You can always tell that Bill Rodgers gets flustered at the end of the marathon TV coverage because, even with the top 10 being Kenyan, Boston Billy probably would have smoked them, at least in the last 2 years.

Blacks dominate sprints, football, basketball, etc, because of their socio-economic status, and not because of their body type.

While white kids hit the books, black kids play hoops. While white kids learn the violin, black kids play football. For a vast majority of the black population in America, sports are the way into college and out of poverty. This is why they excel. They spent more time honing their skills at these sports than white kids do.

Brutal hasn?t crossed over into the racist stuff yet here that I can tell. He?s simply pointing out a statistical correlation between shade and times. Lack of encouragement/role models for pigmentally challenged Americans is definitely a factor, but nowhere near the whole explanation.

That said, we?re still talking about population trends, not individuals. Individuals are as fast as they are.

Wonder why the 200 is different? There are only 2 guys in history faster than Minnea. There?s another pale sort in the top 10. World all-time top 10 - 100, all black. 200, 2 whites. 400, all black. Any theories?

Back to Brutal again, You point out that in the U.S. that

there are no fast white women. Other than Jenny Adams, you

are right that we have at the pro level right now. You

still can't explain why in other countries where there are

fewer white women that compete compared to here, they are

at the top or near the fastest in the world! Even if you

look at the fastest times over the years from the 60,100,

200, & 400, there are white women everywhere. Why is this

Everyone keeps talking about sprinters, but how many white guys have run under 13 for a 5k? My count is one out of around 30 people. How about 10k? Are there any white guys in the top 30 all time? Some white guys may have better skills at certain sports(baseball) but when it comes to pure athletic ability, running, jumping, etc., the black athlete, for whatever reason, is superior.

Vipam, I usually agree with you but this is one instance where I must disagree. If so many white guys are focusing on distance rather than sprinting, why arn't there more sub-13 white guys?

I realize that. That was my point. Vipam was saying earlier that a white guy hasnt run under 10 in the 100 because not enough of them run it. I was merely pointing out that even in the events that white guys do run, they are still far behind.
