You are not wrong. Rupp's situation is much worse than Meb's 2016 and Abdi's 2020. But he's an underdog this time, and I want to see his efforts validated. What makes someone an Olympic medalist is their belief that they can make the impossible, possible. I doubt he is working so hard just for the love of the sport.
Okay, how about a ridiculous hypothetical: If Rupp somehow pulls a Bekele and runs a 2:06:55 at the 2027 Chicago Marathon, what are his chances against guys like Mantz, Hicks and Talbi?

0% chance, if they are healthy.
In this sport, that's a big "if". Several of those faster than him now are likely to not be healthy (like Mantz now), several are likely to be in some kind of slump, overtrained, etc., and some might even not be in the sport. There is constant turnover in the sport. Meb and Abdi show that proven good veterans can pull things out and have higher real odds of success than those that have had just one or two good races.
Rupp needs ambitious goals to keep him going. He is a massive longshot to make the 2028 team, but it gets him out of bed every day.
He obviously genuinely loves the sport. I hope he keeps going for as long as he is getting paid decently.
He’s been getting out of bed and going for a run for about 25 years, so I don’t think he needs Olympic dreams to continue to do so, Does he have a day job?
4 kids are a lot of work ! Should work at Nike and design shoes. Should not be a coach due to past history
I can only imagine Rupp is doing this for the love of the sport at this point. He and his legacy deserve nothing but props.
What is the AR for Masters?
Flotrack posted on Twitter that Sam Chelanga was on pace pretty late in the race for the Masters AR (2:07:xx), and then later that his 2:14:xx finish was indeed the new Masters AR. Can anyone confirm?
Congrats to Chelenga if all true! (and ouch, a rough way to get the AR, hope he is OK)
He achieved the goal he publicly stated - to run faster than his last outing. How old was Abdi when he made his last marathon team? US men’s depth is starting to come around now, but Galen deserves a last dance at the trials to retire. I think it’s awesome that he’s still got the fire to chase a goal.
Remember 2020 Trials in Women, so many fast runners didn't make it to olympics. In marathon, you never know.
But Scott Fauble posted on Twitter that super shoes have made marathons too predictable lol #moran
This likely contradicts opinions I had in the past, but I’m marinating on the take that super shoes may end up being one of the worst things ever in terms of watching interesting and compelling elite level marathons.

Rupp is not Bekele. Love that he's still running fast and that he's pretty healthy, but as a fan of US marathoning, there is no way I or any fan should want to see Rupp on the team. We finally have a solid group of guys that might be able to hang with the best in the world. We need three from that group if we want someone to have a shot at a podium spot in LA, not a 42 year old who might be able to break 2:08.
Yeah Rupp beat Bekele in the 2012 Olympic final so no reason why he should not do better in the marathon if he can stay injury free (like Bekele funnily enough).

If he stays healthy, it no longer becomes a ridiculous hypothetical for him to run a time like that in the fall of 2027. While old, his pedigree is above that of every current US marathoner. He’s insanely talented.
