this argument is like, i had one year i got punted from hurdles to sprints. i had won a couple invites at 300H and placed pretty much every week. i have a squabble with the hurdles coach and get punted to sprints. someone being dishonest or skeptical for the sake of doing so, could say, why is coach running the fastest runner on the team at 100m, he hasn't run or placed in it all season. except i was anchor on sprint relay and had been highly competitive at my other event. i just didn't run one as i was busy with the other.

I was wondering this the other day actually. One of the best moments in my few years watching the sport was watching Hocker win gold. One of the only times I've ever yelled at the screen. On the other hand, watching Nuguse mix it up in/win DLs week in and week out was great, and gave me something to look forward to consistently.
Plus, if Hocker wasn't there, Nuguse getting silver would've been incredible -- probably close to as great as it was to see Hocker win. My reaction to him getting bronze paled in comparison to my reaction to Hocker winning gold, but if I didn't have that to compare it to, it may have been a similar emotional high. For example, Rooks getting silver felt close to as good as Hocker winning gold.
Right now, I err on the side of Hocker winning gold, but I can't tell if that's actually how I feel, or if the LetsRun hivemind has just gaslit me into thinking 1 race in 4 years matters that much.

Hocker needs to prove again he can win after losing to Strand/Koech in the US final last year. It becomes a question of whether you believe he was saving energy for the 5000 or not but personally I don’t think he would have won either.

I didn't say he is done as a runner. He is great in the 3000, and he is the world champ in the 5000, duh.
LOTS of milers move up when the event is done with them.
But the definition of winning an event is ... winning that event. Something he hasn't done a single time since 2024.

Nader (or possibly Koech, the US one). With that much money on the line, it would be a slow race because they would all go conservative. Nader has to be the favourite with his 1:43 800m as well as his blazing finish in Tokyo. As far as I know, Hocker never closed faster than a 51 last lap, while Nader can run that pace for 2 laps.
Koech also schooled Hocker in the Trial, he would be a dark horse in a slow race
That said, if Wanyonyi moves up, they would blow everyone out of the water.

Mar 3 - World Indoor 1500, 2nd
May 17 - 5000 in 12:58, 11th
May 25 - mile in 3:48, 7th
June 24 - US trials 1500, 1st
June 30 - US trials 5000, 7th
Aug 6 - Olympic 1500, 1st
then a couple of 3rds and one 2nd in DL 1500s

It is called peaking. Hocker / Thomas are great at running the best race of the year in the championships when it matters most. If he loses every race for the rest of his life, he is still a US, World, AND Olympic Champion. Oh, and Olympic Record holder for at least 4 years.
But it would be a bad bet to say he'll never win a big 1500/mile again. He has a great kick.
