It’s frustrating to me that everyone on here paints college coaching jobs with such a broad brush. There are actually positions out there (typically non D1) which allow plenty of family time, limited travel, & decent enough pay. Sounds like lack of pay isn’t your primary issue so you could most likely check those other two boxes at least.
Before people jump in & claim you’re just a low level, lazy coach of a bad program if you have a work-life balance, there are plenty of ways to have balance & a successful program if you don’t chase D1 or high pressure positions.
If you can get a head coaching position (non D1) at a school with a supportive staff environment & you have enough assistant coaches, a reasonable lifestyle is possible! Don’t need to sacrifice sending best athletes to great meets (send GA or assistant & stay at local meet with rest of team). Hire good people, delegate well & trust your staff (don’t micromanage) to do their job.
There are plenty of horrible college coaching jobs out there where your passion is taken advantage of. There are also great jobs out there but you need to be open minded & prepared to build something!
