When I saw that there would be mud, water, and sand - I thought XC spikes were the way to go... but my college-era spikes were pretty shriveled up (its been 20 years)... so my plan now is just an old pair of trail shoes. They aren't the best, but I can just toss them post-race if they are trashed. I think the difference between perfect xc spikes and these old trail shoes will only be a few seconds per km.
