I never clean up after my dogs in public places, am I in the wrong

But your dog does belong to you, cleaning up is usually park etiquette and you should do it precisely because it's not your property. If everyone did as you did imagine the smell and look. Or are you trying to create fertilizer and jobs for cleaners?

As someone who also goes to public parks with my dogs, here is my policy:

1) If your dog goes into the woods, off the trails and poops, then no worries. Let it go.

2) If your dog poops on the trails or in the general area where people gather, talk, park, etc., then yes. You should pick it up. At least scoot it into the woods.

I clean up after my dogs if the turd is in a place people walk. I have dogs that like to poop in ditches, and I leave those there. However, if it is anywhere close to a mailbox, driveway, or sidewalk, and especially in a flat area of the yard where people might play or just walk, I pick it up. Keeping areas people walk in free of turds is the decent thing to do.
