I think he dips under 13:20. He damn near beat Alex Yee (who is coming off a 13:13) in the half, although that feels like a weak performance for a guy who wipes the floor with Morgan Pearson on the run leg.

That would be an Australian record
Runner turned cyclist (for 10 years) comes back to running/triathlon and breaks Australian record a few months after return to running.

Noosa is a notoriously slow course, Mottram only ran in the 13:30s there once I think. 8 180 degree turns, and 4 of them are on a narrow street so you come to a complete stop

I was not familiar. Seems like 13:3x would be a nice hit for such a course
Looks like Whelan ran 14.18 at Noosa for 9th. Jude Thomas won in 13.51
Very strange. He split 14:07 in his HM. Hope he’s ok.
I watched the race on YouTube. He’ll be fine. It was a windy day with a 4x out and back stretch. So the top 9 simply ran (slowly) in a pack for 4km. Nobody really wanted to lead. He simply did not have the legs in that last kilometre. Running a HM in 61 min six days ago and then flying out from Spain to Australia a couple days ago may not be the best way to recover/be fresh for a fast last km.
the inside running podcast mentioned that as a U20 (HS/freshman in college for Americans) he ran 8:19 for 3k finishing behind Matt Ramsden (olympian), Oli Hoare (olympian). I cna't find full results but I found a video:
I watched the Spanish broadcast of the Valencia Half Marathon on YouTube and the two Spanish commentators were commenting that after the halfway mark the course was slightly downhill all the way to the finish or part of the way to the finish I can't remember exactly the words but a significant portion of the race was slightly downhill so I'm not sure how that counts for ratification.
What? It's clearly record eligible since you know, records have been ratified there. So bizarre for people to second guess a time or course in 2025
Now he needs to listen to my advice about the swimming. Just get a swim coach now. Simply do drills perhaps (it won’t hurt your running). But start wiring your brain now.
He hates swimming and knows it's too late for him to get to a decent enough level to be competitive in triathlon. He's done with triathlon.
In his first try, he swam a 28:48 in the Ocean (Sam Long swam a 27:49 to win Eagleman earlier this year). Safe to say he can probably get to something half decent in a short period of time. Sam can’t run 61 min for a HM or push 7.5w/kg for 5min at the end of a 4 hour bike race.
On the flip side, his run is great (could get a sub 60 soon), but he only needs to look in the mirror to see that he is missing something to be the world’s best. The world record is 56:42.

Agreed, triathlon is his best shot to be among the best in the world.
Sam Long is just a youtube influencer. He didn't show up at 70.3 Worlds last weekend because he knew he'd be exposed.
He's also expecting a child any day now and signed up for Ironman Arizona. I think he knew he would struggle to be top 20 in Marbella and focused his attention on getting a Kona Qualification early in the cycle.

6.75w/kg is serious 20min power for a guy who can run a 61min HM.
I don’t think that any triathletes have an FTP of above 6.0w/kg (maybe Dietlev)?
…that would make him 1min faster than Dietlev for every 30km on the bike (3min for 90km)
