from this, I suspect he was set up as fall guy, and the powers that be, let him out of jail, maybe with compensation, and the whole thing was swept under the rug, this would be a conspiracy theory, knowing something though, in how these things may work.
surely, you don't get 10 years sentence reduced to months, without help from powers that be.

He was first arrested in 2004 and he was released from prison in 2011. His case took a very long time to work its way through the courts, during which time he was under house arrest. I think it is as likely if not more likely that his sentence was reduced because of all the time he served while awaiting trial, not because he was the fall guy.
But South Africa has experienced a great deal of political corruption, so who knows for sure.
I would love the guy who says he trained with Maree to give us more information if he can, mostly just out of curiosity, there's a real absence of public info about what the top levels of US distance running were like in that era. I don't have too hard of a time giving some credence to what the guy says just because it would be so incredibly random (albeit not impossible) for somebody to start slandering Sydney Maree of all people out of nowhere in 2025.
