We’ve changed the thread title many times. At one point, it was called: Tokyo 2025 World Athletics Championships Day 8 Live Discussion Thread - US men bomb out of 4 x 400, Jamaica men bomb out of 4 x 100
The US can't afford to send a B team in this event anymore when the A team isn't even that amazing. All the 400 guys choked big time here and in the open 4 as well. They needed to send their best team perhaps minus one guy. The rest of the world is just way closer now.
First priority of a relay coach is to ENSURE that ALL members of a relay team are IN SHAPE. If you have any questions regarding fitness, you leave their ass at home! Doesn't matter what they placed at the US nationals...DITCH THEM! Then you look for some modicum of a functioning brain that can handle a hand-off. All 4 of those BOZOS demonstrated neither.
Official can rearrange runners, however I teach youth track kids to watch for positioning of the inbound runner. Amateur hour.
They set the positions at 200m
You're allowed adjust in NCAA and High school meets but not in WA events.
There were DQs for this at world relays last year.
Also the official got ireland and Nigerian green uniforms confused and Adeleke coming in 2nd or 3rs.had to crash across 4 lanes to give the baton in the 7th position

I’m not gonna lie, if they throw out a subpar team in the men’s 4x100 and they don’t advance it’s going to look really bad. Jamaica is running their top guys in the prelim. The US has this obsession with giving participation trophies for relays when there’s money and medals on the line.
Was what Zambia did against the rules? As a distance person who only ever ran bush league 4x4s I have no idea what’s actually allowed.
Either he reaches across or the US reaches across. It was too late to switch places and the Zambian runner got there first. I don't see any way that the USA get advanced.

As a non-American (and an official with international experience) when I read Stormtrack's post I was like, "What are you smoking? No one can reset the lineup after the 200 mark!" Now that you've explained why Stormtrack would think this, I'm equally bemused as to why the NCAA doesn't use WA rules?! Anyone know why?

As stated above. There is not switching after 200m. The officials set them and they need to stay in that position. Maybe Bryce moves down but again the issue is 1st and 2nd legs being slow.

With no track finals until 9 pm, I figured getting to the track at 7:30 was more than early enough. We come into via the basement and walk through the mixed zone on the way to the seats.
I look up and see Jonathan Gault of LetsRun and Eddie Pells of the Associated Press in the mixed and immediately think, “Uh oh. What the hell did I miss? Some field or multi WR?”
Jonathan told me the US failed to qualify in the 4 x 400. Both Jonathan and Larry Eder said the 2nd exchange between Demarius Smith and the Bryce Deadmon was one of the worse they had ever seen. They said somehow took like 2 seconds for it to take place (Eder put the blame on Smith).
Jay Holder of USATF implied we were going to be filing some sort of protest arguing Zambia cut us off (not sure when). The US ran 3:01.06 for sixth when we needed to finish third (3:00.23) as the two time qualifiers came from the 2nd semi.
But the person above nailed it. This event isn’t easy anymore and hasn’t been for some while. I mean even 10 years ago there were teams like Botswana running under 3:00 and not qualifying for the final.

Yes, you’ll notice Botswana ran Tebogo, Ndori (bronze medalist two nights ago, and Eppie (finalist). They were only missing the champ.
Team USA didn’t have any of their top 3 individual performers from these championships.

McKiver has demonstrated fitness. He ran a 43.91 split in the mixed relay.
