What's silly about it. Maybe you just don't like relays but what's the difference if there are 4 me or 4 women in a relay vs 2 men and 2 women in a relay?
This event should become the cornerstone of Track and Field. The gender examinations of every participant should be broadcast in HD 1080P to every country, and those that do not watch should be thrown in jail! The POPE MUST get on board!!!! hahaha
This is about gender and what a man and woman is!!!! NOTHING ELSE. WE MUST STOP TRANS PEOPLE. We Musk!!!!! Track and Field yeah baby! The four by two sexes, not 4 by QUEERS. Put those genital examinations on the 1080P in the middle of nowhere Africa so they ALL KNOW!!!!!!!!!
Either that, or replace the two 4x4s with a mixed 4x4 so that the best athletes have to run it.
B-listers shouldn't be winning gold medals
Hate to say it but when the event was added it really felt like it was to help Allyson Felix. The WA (IAAF) and USATF REALLY wanted her to be the most decorated t&f athlete. Just another thing to talk about on top of her being a mom. Don't get me wrong, she's prob the best women's T&F athlete but she shouldn't have that accolade and only does bc this made up event was added.
This is a garbage event and it never should have been added. Axe it.
I agree this has been a failed experiment. Fans don't care and the athletes don't care.
It was a little better when men and women would race each other on the same leg, but it's boring now that the men and women are required to be on separate legs.
A Distance Medley Relay would be 100x more interesting.
Fans demonstrably care a lot, actually. It's why they are adding a co-ed 4x100 relay. I can promise you that more fans cared about the co-ed 4x400 at the Olympic last year than the women's steeplechase.
Literally all athletes outside of the United States care. Also, Olympic/World championship gold is still gold, even if no one here sees it that way. Femke Bol is forever an Olympic gold medalist.
The event is fine. If anything, remove the restriction on orders. Let each team figure out the best combination.
I've heard a rumor repeated several times that the rules around the order were changed because men running down the women was feeding cultural discourse around gender. Does anyone know if this is 100% true?

To LetsRunners, yes, but otherwise the DMR takes too long.
I like the mixed realy, and it’s nice to see the other countries get excited for it.
This year was a bit of a snoozefest, but the year Femke fell was box office.
Yes, agreed. No one outside of this website cares about the DMR. Long, niche event that makes zero sense to casual viewers. Why is that person running 3 laps? And why is that person starting so fast? Why did that person only run 2 laps?
Here's a good middle ground: 4x800. Gives the distance runners some light, very exciting (watch the CIF state meet 4x800 and tell me it's boring!), ect ect ect.

Yeah, maybe, but I think it would bring other nations into the mix who aren't the usual contenders at the 4x100/4x400. You'd see Norway, Kenya, Ethiopia in the mix rather than just US, Jamaica, and Canada.

Idk, if people can learn what goes into a heptathlon/decathlon, they could figure out the DMR pretty quickly. Maybe it gets re-structured as 1-2-3-4 laps to keep it simple.

I thought DSD / trans had to do with it - "look at an Olympic male dominating an Olympic level female - this isn't fair"

I bet most people can’t figure out the multis. No one cares about them, and here no one cares unless the athlete is attractive (e.g., Anna Hall).
How about drawing straws on the order any given country runs the DMR in? Lane one is running 4-3-2-1, lane two is 3-4-1-2, etc. It at least keeps the 1600 guys honest because they're trying to set a time or they're trying to make up time.
The problem with the 4x400 relays will always be that the US team usually wins it way too easily.
And now I will offend many by saying it's because they are doped to the eyeballs and have always gotten away with it.
Currently NCAA athletes can microdope with impunity, as there are no surprise night tests. That favors Americans obviously. But also the Jamaicans have never seemed all that interested in the 400 for some reason, at least not the men.

Jamaicans could be better at the 400 than the US if they wanted to. They have a bunch of guys running low 10/high 9 and far superior development to us (Seville was a junior level star).
However, Bolt being a 100/200 star has firmly set the direction of many sprinters - no one wants to do hard 400 training, they all want to do the 100, where the stardom and money is.
