Only if Grant wins on Thursday does that unlock a 4 team spot for the next highest WC qualifier from USAs, which we now know would go to Cooper.Have to agree with prior posters who have pointed out that Drew chose to run (and win) the 1500 @ Sound Running's Sunset Tour meet rather than the 5000 which Eduardo Herrera won in 12:58 while Rocky Hansen led/rabbited most of the last half before finishing 2nd in 13:07. Perfect opportunity for Drew to get his 13:01 Tokyo Q.

However, Drew stated many times this year is disdain for time trialing.

So, he chose to race the NACAC meet where he simply completed against Cooper in a very slow race with a final burn up where Drew edged Cooper by a few hundredths -- but in a time so slow even the 150 or so bonus points Drew earned FTW couldn't get him into WA's top-42 rankings for the 5000.

Seems that Drew made two recent strategic errors: not racing the Sunset Tour 5000, then allowing the NACAC 5000 to turn into a jogfest.

In any case, Cooper Teare is now Grant's biggest fan.

That’s true, they’ve left their options open. I saw some roster where they had Kipngetich listed as alternate, but now looking back it seems they told the potential DL wild card-eligible guys to stay ready. Makes me wonder if that’s why we’ve seen one combined race from Brian Komen and Chepkwony.

Makes you wonder if they should place the DL Final closer to the host site of Worlds, but maybe that doesn’t factor.

good things:

men's 800 full of 1:41 types, women's steeple has a way under 9 type.

bad things: top runners MIA from a lot of events, like El Bakkali in men's steeple. Noone in the field has ran sub 8 this year. Noone in women's 3000 has ran sub 8:22.

Entire men's 400m field has SB 44.xx none of them ran sub 44 all year. Someone tell them about bicarb

Nordaas will not run the 1500 in Zurich. Next in line is Josh Kerr and then Pihlstrom followed by Giles

Jacory Patterson ran sub-44 this year. His first time under the barrier.

Probably will be Pihlstrom and deservedly so.

I still think Addy Wiley has a solid chance of earning her trip to Tokyo here (I'm surprised her prospects weren't discussed on the LetsRun podcast along with those of Hoey and Nuguse).

If you look at the start list for her race: No Keely. Werro just ran 1:56 but she's only the Swiss wild card so can't win the DL, Wiley doesn't need to beat her. Duguma would be a major roadblock but she hasn't run since July 5 and actually withdrew from Lausanne, so she may well not be in good shape. Sekgodiso has a faster SB but slower PB and is likely in comparable shape. Admittedly, Hunter Bell is a major obvious difficulty and is surely the favorite, but she may have an off-race, doesn't need to stamp her ticket so won't have the same motivation, etc.

They moved the women's pole vault to day 1 after the bad weather forecast because they don't want to risk cancelling it mid-competition like in Lausanne
