Why do we do this? He was just 4th @ USAs in 3:31, in a multi-round format. He ran a 3:46 mile in February. Maybe he just peaked for USAs, or is dealing with some disappointment in not making the team, or maybe his season is just starting to drag a bit, or maybe it's the travel. OR, we could start a thread calling him washed, ignoring the solid season he's had & the progress he's been making. Up to OP + others I guess.
Is the king999 guy still around? Who is Kessler now coached by?
My understanding is he is coached by his team of father, a Physiologist for checks on lactate ? Etc. and Pat Henner. Ron is 82,still involved with a few runners.Everyone today is looking for the nuevo way, good old nuts and bolts was working fine. Long run, Intervals, Hills, Michigans. That's my commentary, yesterday was puzzling is all I can say.In a good spot, the 1200 was not back breaking, I don't think I have seen anyone fall thru a pack like that, with like 190 left? not lately.
Does Henner coach him remotely? seems an odd setup. I like that Hobbs is thoughtful and honest. He's a really likeable kid. but i think he very likely OVER thinks.

Not sure. But I noticed something, it may be nothing, seen it befor last 120M. He looks to his right Nuguse is right there, he puffs his checks out, like exaggerated breathing and almost immediately .I have also seen it in two other spots in races and wondered if I was nuts. So, I had a non track person watch it, they said it clearly looks different,

I believe Henner lives in AZ and drive up to flag for some of Kessler’s workouts. If Henner is doing things similarly to when he was at Georgetown, I’m not super surprised that Kessler is having the season that he is. The Georgetown mid-D squad would often run great time trials indoors or early in the season but fizzle out by the time championships rolled around. I don’t think Henner had as big of a role in Kessler’s training last year but I may be mistaken. A change would be good. Can’t fault him for going pro over going to college but gotta wonder what Smith could have done with him.
Kessler is a great talent who is doing it clean. The ups and downs he has had/is having are a NORMAL part of being a clean athlete. Running is one of the most difficult sports as far as toll on the body. Improvement is often not linear.

I think the simplest explanation for the season is USAs was such a bummer, he’s having a tough time bouncing back mentally. Last year he gathered momentum honestly after a grinding USAs where I don’t think the finals was actually his best because he was so tightly wound up.
Fair to say things went the exact opposite way this year despite an objectively better performance at USAs. Track him vs Vincent Ciattei let’s say. Ciattei ran somewhat worse at USAs than last year but since then he’s PBed in the 3,000 and 1,500. He went into USAs probably thinking it was a long shot to make it, so no post-Trials hangover.
Selfishly I hope he runs 5th Avenue Mile because he’s always been good at Road miles and it’d be a good low-pressure way to close out the season.
