A woman signed her husband up for a marathon with 24 hours notice after he bragged he could complete 26.2 miles without any training. The 32-year-old successfully completed the marathon.
Guess his time.
I'll reveal it at 11:00 am ET.
Does he have background in athletics? Normal healthy people can do it in 5 hour 30 minutes with zero training. If he has background in athletics such as biking or swimming, he can probably run a 4:30.
Any training history or personal best? Some former D1 30 min 10k runner who is still running 50-60 miles a week to stay in shape is very different from a coach potato definition of no training.
Right?
It's like saying 'Man says he could throw the shot put without training, guess how far?'
(Is he a powerlifter, or a distance runner???)
That said, I'll guess an average of 11 minutes per mile for a 4:48.

Most runners who have been doing it for awhile overestimate how quickly someone with no base or experience will blow up. It’s almost immediately.
For someone like that to do a marathon, it’s gonna be a walk/jog.
My guess is that he ran the first half in about 2.5 hours; the second half 3.5.
Good guess. Nearly hit the nail on the head: off by only about 5 minutes.
From the splits and what he seemed to say in the article, it appears that he jogged 10 miles in around 11:00/mi or so, then switched to mostly walking with a little interspersed jogging for the rest (splits might suggest around 2/3 walking, 1/3 jogging).
I can appreciate his effort, and it’s fine for them if the couple had fun with the challenge and everything, but I don’t think he really backed up his boasting all that well. I’d have considered it complete even if he’d manage to maintain a 12:30 shuffle for the whole thing without much walking (like only if he wanted to walk a little in fluid stations or into/out of a port-a-potty or aid station).
So tired of this crap where people think that running a marathon with no training is something worthy of our attention. It is not and it is disrespectful of the sport. No one would write an article about someone entering a tennis tournament who never played tennis before or paid $1,200 to play Pebble Beach but never held a golf club before. And running a marathon with no training is even worse because the odds are pretty good that you can get injured and even need medical support on the course, taking away the availability of personnel to serve the people who actually took the event seriously.
The whole point of the marathon is the preparation and dedication needed to do well. Showing up with no training on a bet proves nothing other than you are dumb and disrespectful of those who did the work.
The cutoff for all major marathons should be 3h 30 mins; as Cerutty suggested back in the day. The speedwalking record for the marathon is around 3hrs so 3h 30 mins is more than generous as a cutoff.

The average finish time at the NYC Marathon:
Men ~415, Women 440.
”Serious Runners” think it’s about them. It’s not. The mid packers pay the bills for a running organization, in this case NYRR.
The sub elites can diddle themselves about their times but they make no money and no one cares.

It's not necessarily the divide between 4 hour marathoners and 2:2x marathoners. But the idea of finishing a marathons equals running it. Like no, a 6 hour marathon is a walk with some jogging. I can respect out of shape middle aged men and women getting in shape to jog a marathon in 4 odd hours. But some dude doing this stunt is not impressive.
Sorry for the delay. I got caught up on a call. I should have added he doesn't work out at all and isn't a runner but I only realized that after making my original post. . .
So, LetsRun added an edit function a while back.
Also, you own the site and can change any post at any time.

They would lose 80% of the field. A 3:30 is really solid for someone in their 60s.
While I do roll my eyes at people celebrating their 7 hour marathons, I’d rather see people run/walking slow times than remaining sedentary.
