Eighth graders are legitimately turning 14 this year. Born in 2011. 15 this year is overage. Would be in the 15-16 bracket at USATF meets.
Yes, 8th graders, but she is a 7th grader...
Anyway, I am fine with whatever, be old or young for your grade. But sports are based on age, not grades in most countries. That is not controversial. All the other countries use the athletes age, not their grades because it makes more sense.
BTW, here are the normal ages in America. Being off by two years is a lot when it comes to sports:
7th grade 12/13
8th grade 13/14
9th grade 14/15
10th grade 15/16
11th grade 16/17
12th grade 17/18 (graduating at 19 is not uncommon but it is not "normal" either)
p.s. This doesn't take anything from the fact that run is one of the best middle school runs of all time b/c even if she were in 8th grade, it would be a one-in-a-million effort!
Furthermore, everything I've read says that she's 13, which could be anywhere from slightly younger than slightly older than average . . . but definitely in the correct class for a 7th-grader in June.
No it's not. Turning 14 this year is the correct age for 8th grade, as other posters have noted -with very slight wiggle room for exception. But like others said... doesn't matter, her time is INSANE for MS, period, and she's solidly in MS by age.
No. Nationally, the average 8th-grader turns 14 in April of their 8th-grade year. The average 9th grader turns 15 in April. The average 12th grader turns 18 in April. But that varies by state. If she is 13 now, she did not turn 14 during her 7th grade year. At most, she is a matter of months older than the average girl in her grade.

Ideally, how it's set up in many places, is that you turn 14 the calendar year you graduate 8th grade, and 18 the calendar year you graduate HS. And as an aside, per USATF and AAU, to keep things uniform and competition fair, you are considered the age you turn that calendar year on Jan 1st of that year, for the entire year. Thats why these "middle school" races are kinda sketchy. You've got 11 year olds up against 15, sometimes 16 year olds.
Timing error most likely. Her previous pb was around 54 seconds.
I timed it. Legit.
I've seen various reports which list her as 13 and 14 so I'm not sure if she's a year old for a 7th grader or not but even if she was an 8th grader this is fantastic.
13? 14? 15? Who cares? Even if she were an 18 year old senior, or hell, a 19 year old senior, it is *still* a fantastic time.
There is no way in hell this is legit. A 13 year old GIRL running 51.6 is literally impossible. Either there's a timing error or they are on crazy steroids. That's equivalent to a 13 year old boy running 45. There is just no way. This needs serious review
Couldnt be drugs at that age, surely. Theyre all still children. It could be the fancy shoes, but i dont know how much of a gain they would be on 13 and 14 year old girls. And yes i agree.13 year old girls cannot run 51.6.Theres something else going on here, but i cant put my finger on it.

I watched it live. Complete talent. Super light on her feet, smooth. She had someone to chase and look, she blew out an athlete on our team that has run 56 consistently. Half the field had PRs of 54-56 and she probably won by 20m+ and looked way better/faster than the high school field.
Can't believe half the thread is arguing about age for middle schoolers, when this is an outstanding time for HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETES. Period. I will even extend it to a great time for a college girl. Who cares what age she is in middle school?
I see a lot of doubters on here. It's obvious why. It's not because of her age but her race. If she were white and ran a fast mile there would be no questions. Did any of you question a high school girl running a 4:23? Or a high school junior running a 1:46, breaking a 29 year old record?
Literally nothing to do with race, but go ahead and play victim. This has to do with maturity, both physically and mentally. Theres a reason why high schoolers aren’t being questioned- it’s because they’re most fully developed, whereas a middle schooler may not have even hit puberty yet.

I don’t know man…as good as Hedengren and Lutkenhaus are, I don’t think it’s quite on the same level as a 13 year old girl running a 51. Just kind of weird to suggest racism when speculating on circumstances around one of the most mind blowingly fast times ever.
But I mean Quincy Wilson ran, what? 44.2 when he was 15 or 16? But still, imagine this girl running 49 or 48 at 15-16, would be crazy

Turning 14 this year.
Another girl of the same exact age ran 52 something a few weeks ago.
Why are you insisting this can't be done, when it has been done?

Nope. No. Don't even try to go there because that is not it.

A high school girl running 4:23 is nowhere close to a 7th grade girl running 51.
