Love Jim but why did he have to go so hard at Chianti and ruin this great WSER field?!?! like high stepping at the 50 and getting caught at the goal line!!
Yeah but even with Walmsley and Hawks not starting WS is still way more stacked than Leadville and Javelina combined.
Plus the vertical gain/loss of Western states is 18000 ft gain and losses 23000 feet. Javelina is only 3000 ft of gain and loss. Leadville is 15000 ft of gain and loss. Another thing is how do we know he's being honest about his training? Someone lying about how they train to get more clients seems like within the realms of possibilities.
Exactly. But the Roche fanboys eat up everything he says while Roche copy+pastes their training plans making a pretty penny. I'd be surprised if Roche makes Top5 at Western States.

It's all true, I can't live with the guilt anymore: I Strava Mule for Roche. Like that Gold Hill FKT? That was all me. What can I say, I'm good, but the local boys kicked my pants shortly afterwards. Many of the other training runs we just doctored the GPX that were exported from a watch using an app like GPSBabel or even FakeMy.Run if we're feeling lazy. Then I just make it look like it was from an iPhone when we finally uploaded it. The HR-only workouts were easily faked using a quick and dirty Raspberry Pi board I cobbled together that creates a simple electronic "heart rate" pulse off the CPU's clock -- but we actually did wrap an HR Monitor to it -- a kludgey (you can just fake the data), but David liked how it looked. There's a little dial I built in to increase/decrease it.
Glad I got that all off my chest. Love and Unicorns.
he trains like he is prepping for a 10k. will be lucky to make the start, and luckier to finish. in the meantime the knee looks like it's going to let him due a few more track workouts before the race.
Roche used that training approach to set course records at two 100 milers last year, Leadville and Javelina. But you knew that already. He's not likely to win WSER, but talking about him like he isn't among the possible contenders is stupid.
FACT CHECK: Roche only set the CR at Leadville (it was a long time coming).
He did win Javelina 100 also, but was lucky to barely hold off Mogavero and Green. It was not a CR. So don't say he "set two course records at 100-milers last year"....liar.
Referring to Kilian Jornet? His best time on this course is slower than the women's course record. Western states is a running race, not a hiking race like utmb and hardrock is.
Kilian beat Jakob in a road 10k.
In all seriousness though, Kilian has legit speed. His biggest issue is heat tolerance. This *will* be a running race, but, if its a hot year, one that involves a need to persevere in the heat.
LOTs of things can happen in a 100-miler. Lots of names on that start least that could challenge for the W if they find themselves having a good day.

That 100 mile course record could’ve been gotten by Roche that day. He tripped or took the foot off the gas.
I really wanna see Hannes Namberger doing well. I don't know how well he does in the heat but he was 4th at UTMB (+2x Top 10), won Lavaredo 3x and recently finished 3rd at Canyons getting him that Golden Ticket. Fwiw there's a ton of other runners with similar resumees in the race - and Roche doesn't stand out.. he's just the loudest right now. I'm still hoping for an exciting day glued to the livestream.

One person is saying he only set the course record at Leadville, while another argues he could have set the record at Javelina 100 as well. It’s a discussion about the specifics of his performance and whether luck played a role.

i'm looking for someone to create odds on how many times we will spot "the feed" on the livestream.

I expect to see him quite a bit in the livestream in the first half of the race as he'll probably go out with whoever is taking the lead regardless of whether that's a sustainable pace for him or suicide. My crystal ball says we won't see him that much in the second half anymore.

I suspect all coaches pretty much copy and paste training plans. I mean, it’s running.

When you sell individualized coaching I'd expect to get that and not some plan that 100 others already have. Otherwise just sell plans for a one off charge and not $140 a month.

Precisely man lolllllllllllll!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I mean there are so many Tom Dick Harry coaches around the world coaching age groupers to the gold medal in their age groups, and so many elite runner converted coaches subsequently coaching other athletes to world and olympic medals it's quite obvious there is no secret training recipe only they have and the rest don't.
In fact training isn't even the secret sauce of success for the elite athlete, it's anthropogenic RF man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Your statement proves my point again and again that you neither need specialty coaching training nor own an exclusive training plan to successfully coach any Tom Dick Harry to distance stardom!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My research and experience shows that a specialty drugs plan or exclusive proprietary drugs regime is far more likely to lead to a successful and emotionally/financially satisfactory result for both athlete and coach!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's a no-brainer you feelin me folks??????????///
