Members of the military will still be served soda and junk food in mess halls plus access to discounted tobacco products, soda, and junk food in exchange stores.
I'm left-leaning and I am 100% in favor of this. Food policy in this country is a disaster in harming our health. I'm not delusional enough to think one change is going to make a huge difference but this is exactly the kind of small change that when the strung together with other small changes will improve our health.
Soda is nothing but sugar water with no redeeming value whatsoever.

But this measure isn't linked to any other actions. If they were aiming to restrict soda sales, tax sugary drinks, or even ban them entirely for those under 16, I could support it remove it from snap.
But they aren’t taking any of those steps, and they likely never will. This is simply an opportunity to take something away from people who are poor—a move that rich Republicans can't resist.

Because people who pay for their own stuff have the freedom to buy whatever they want and whatever they can afford. People who use other people's money have some more limitations. It's common sense. You want more options, pay for it yourself. They should be on their hands and knees thanking us for feeding them and helping them survive, not complaining because they don't like the giveaways theyre getting. If you were homeless and went to a soup kitchen, would you complain to the person feeding you that you wanted clam chowder and not vegetable soup? Tough luck, eat what you're given for free, you're welcome!
When will they ban non-nutritive things like celery, other green vegetables?
Those are not food. No calories.
It's important to note that nothing is banned. Food stamp recipients can still buy all the mountain dew and dortios they want, just like anybody else. They may just have to pay that portion of their grocery bill with their own money. I know the thought of paying for ANYTHING with their own money instead of someone else's is a huge burden. But maybe just a few bucks a week. The same foods are still available to everyone.

It is a start and every movement needs a first step. I hope in the coming years we will see this continue and we get better food policy in this country.

This is the part where you demonstrate the validity of my argument.
You enjoy feeling powerful and exercising control over others. It's a tic which will his consistently lead you to voting for the Republican Party.
This won't improve health outcomes or benefit taxpayers. You simply relish imposing restrictions on those who are less able or less fortunate than you, for fun.

Wrong, I don't enjoy any of it. I don't enjoy having my paycheck pillaged so a significant portion of what I earn gets forcefully taken from me and given to lazy people who refuse to contribute. Its not a satisfaction of having power or anything else. If I had my way, I would earn what I earn, they would earn what they earn, and we would all have the choice to buy whatever we wanted. But seeing as how my hard earned money is forcefully taken and given to others, the least they could do is not turn around and complain about they handouts they are given
"If you were homeless and went to a soup kitchen, would you complain to the person feeding you that you wanted clam chowder and not vegetable soup?"
If I was homeless and both clam chowder and vegetable soup were available, and then some self-important person came in who claimed they funded the kitchen and insisted that I must only be served the vegetable soup because it’s healthier, while they themselves started eating the clam chowder, then I'd wonder what life had led them to be more screwed up than me.

And how will stopping them buying soda with their snap benefit you?

But everything is available to them. Nobody is telling them they can't buy chips, soda, or anything else. They may need to spend their own money for that stuff, while we pay the rest of their bill. But if they can't shell out a few dollars for the handful of things that aren't free to them, then there is no right to complain. I don't buy kobe beef and lobster every week because it's more than I want to spend. But I don't say these items aren't available to me. The free stuff is limted to a very small degree. But you want beer, cigs, chips, soda, then spend a small portion of your own money!

So if they use snap to buy a $1 bottle of fruit juice that's fine, but a $1 can of soda is not?
The ban is good but it's funny that "republicans" are now OK with the government telling people what they can and can't do. I hope none of them ever fly a "Don't Tread on Me" flag.
Applauding this reform does not run contrary to MAGA or conservative ideals at all. Yes, conservatives generally disagree with overbearing regulations telling the individual what they can and can not eat or drink. A free person is entitled to make those decisions for themselves. PROVIDED THEY ARE SPENDING THEIR OWN MONEY.
Food stamps are a government hand-out! Funded by taxpayers and intended to save the poorest among us from malnourishment and starvation. As such, they should rightly come with stipulations so that people use the money for that purpose and not waste it by purchasing junk food that will predispose them to diabetes and other maladies.
I don't begrudge those on food stamps for buying soda, their lives are already challenging enough without judgment from control-freak Republicans, who likely spend $20 on breakfast each day.
This isn't about promoting healthy eating, it's about demoralizing the working class. "Give up your minor luxuries and jump through our hoops poors!"
Why not impose restrictions on everyone? The truth is that if you're wealthy enough, they don't care about your choices.
No one is controlling anyone's life. There are no "restrictions" on poor people buying snacks. That is just another one of your lib oppression fantasies, and no one is falling for the hysterics anymore. If someone on food stamps wants to buy a 100g sugar soda or a box of twinkies with their own money, they are more than free to do so. I eat those things myself occasionally, so I certainly won't be "judging" them either. Is the government also "controlling my life" by not mailing me a fresh restock of little Debbie's every month? By your logic they would be.
However, when people are spending the taxpayers money, the state has a valid interest in making sure that money is not wasted on junk food. These programs are meant to help people survive not provide "minor luxuries". No one is saying they should only be able to eat unsalted rice, so quit the the dramatics.
curious if you folks realize the leading ethnic group on food stamps is white people. because this attack feels very very racially coded. from the same folks who think that crack is a cultural problem but opiates are pharma's fault, not the white folks who take pain meds.
Once again the lib mind fails to comprehend the concept of "per capita". Much like not being able understand analogies, this is a sign of a truly low IQ individual.

And this is going to affect you how exactly?
Horrible argument. If they buy beer and cigarettes, does that personally affect me? No. But is it the right thing to do and is it a proper use of tax funds? No. Bottom line, welfare benefits are not all inclusive. Regardless of whether I'm personally impacted or not, i can have the opinion that's it's ridiculous for the recipients of free handouts to complain about a few insignificant changes. You could spin it to say, are they really negatively impacted if they have to buy sweet tea or juice instead of soda? No, they aren't.
Ideally, we would only pay for the bare necessities for these individuals. Milk, bread, eggs, some fruits and vegetables. Anything else they want is out of pocket for them. Then I would be positively affected since less money would be taken from all of us for entitlements. But that won't happen in my lifetime unfortunatley. So the moochers will just need to accept their juice instead of soda 😥
Don’t care. When you don’t pay for it yourself you forfeit choice over what you can buy.
you are so full of crap. i invite you to go to the bad side of town and search for the grocery store with the huge produce section and abundant natural and organic foods options. hint: the "walmart grocery store" or off-brand grocery that bothers to open in the hood, usually has a tiny produce area, and a bunch of cheap junk for sale.
do you not see why expensive vegetables, fruits, meats, etc. might not be there? it's called they don't have money.
i live in a mediocre section of town where my wife bought our house. if i want nice groceries -- and i have a degree and a job -- i have to drive out of here. it is not as simple as get a job and buy it down the street.
and the town i lived in for grad school didn't even have a grocery, poverty was so bad. at which point your choices are takeout, shopping at a drug store, or crossing a bridge on a multi-mile walk with a week's stuff.
you cannot possibly have lived the sh*t you are talking.
Why are the only options twinkies or 30 dollar organic vegetables? This is a false dichotomy. They have rice, beans, bread, canned vegetables, ect. everywhere. These "food deserts" in low income neighborhoods that only sell hot fudge sundaes and doughnuts do not actually exist except for inside the white liberal mind.
