This thread is so full of dumb, this kid is the best us mid distance prospect ever. Just be excited to sit back and watch, the 800 his best event now but who knows what will happen in the future, don’t bicker like little twits. If the 1500 keeps getting better(which it has been) the Olympic champion in 2032 is probably going to be a 143 or better guy with great 400 speed. Or maybe he runs 140. Or maybe he quits tomorrow. no one knows.
Cooper's Running Form reminds me of Peter Snell or perhaps Van Damme. However, his training is probably more suited for an Alberto Juantorenna style of athlete. Nonetheless, 4:06 on Max 35mpw is quite an accomplishment- even if he is not training to be a Miler.
A pretty good performance but shows that he is not a miler. Especially on his somewhat strength based program. I dont think he can become one either. Fast 400/800 guys cant just increase mileage and become better at endurance events. The same thing that makes them respond well to sprint training makes them respond poorly to true endurance training.
Webb ran 4:06 as a sophomore. Centro / Nuguse / Hocker much slower. I don’t see how this “shows he isn’t a miler”… when he is running a lot less mileage and a lot fewer endurance workouts.
I’m not saying he is a miler. But if a sophomore is training a on a low mileage, sprint based program, and is running faster than our most prodigious talents at the same age, that’s promising.
He could be a 400 / 800 / miler right now depending on what he wanted to focus on.

No, he is not a miler, but that doesn't mean he can't run a relatively good mile. 4:06 is very good for a high school kid, but relative to his 800m performances, it is pedestrian. His 400/800 performances indicate he is currently D1 caliber athlete, which almost automatically means he is going to be good at the H.S. level in cross country, the mile and even the 200m. Quiency Wilson once ran a 1:50x 800m and he probably could run a decent mile, none of which should be surprising considering he is an endurance-based world class long sprinter. (get the point!)
We haven't had a truly competitive guy at 800/1500 since Ryun, so that would be nice to have and that is his ceiling. It would probably not take much, maybe a tempo to replace one fast workout, for him to go sub-4 already. If he gains too much muscle, this may not happen, but anyone who can run 4:06 in that weather on 30-35 mpw as a sophomore can run well under 4 as a senior with slight changes in training.

No, he isn't competitive in the 800m, yet. His 1:43.64 pr was two and a half seconds slower than Olympic gold and silver. 7th place was .8s quicker than Hobbs' pr. Four guys ran 1:41.7 or better in one race, and numerous others ran 1:41/42 last year.

Who is to say he needs to change anything? This is first official mile, or second if you count his time trial last summer.

He runs a lot like Tom Courtney, who could run a great 400 along with his outstanding 800s in the 1950s.

I hate letsruns obsession with guys moving up. Obviously a very impressive performance but
1. Much less impressive than his 1:46 indoors
2. not as impressive as his 46.3 (!!!) at least according to IAAF points calculator, which says it’s equivalent to a 3:58 mile.
yeah bro might end up running more mileage, doing more T, getting way stronger, but you could say the same about getting older, developing, probably doing more lifting and plyos. He’s a brazier type of runner, perfect for 800 with some range. That’ll be fun for a few years, but in today’s USA track world, he’ll need to develop into a sub 3:29 guy to make a team one day in the 15. I mean Marco freakin Langon has run 3:33 as a true junior and that’s not even his best event. Cooper could end up being the short distance goat in grand slam though
Give a guy some exploration time. Some sophomore kid shows promise on trumpet, I’m not gonna make him declare a major on it for college. He can go steeplechase and kudos to him.
Cooper is on a whole other level right now. The fact that this was a full mile is crazier because it definitely convert to at least a 4:05 1600. There is a sophomore in California right now that just ran 4:06 in the 1600 not sure if he's #2 behind Cooper, the Cali kid is looking like he's going to be dangerous. I believe he's the fastest Cali sophomore since one of the Young twins. Now imagine Cooper is faster than this on lower mileage and probably a lower effort. Brazier's Senior year is 1:47 and a 4:07 (1600). Is Cooper a 1:43 guy by his Senior year?
I don't like it either but it is a fact. Most people say 1/4, 1/2, and mile. Full mile means mile to them.
So it’s necessary to refer to a “full” mile to accommodate people posting here that might think a mile can mean 1600m? Instead, maybe they can up their game a tiny bit and understand that a mile has only one definition. If they need the unnecessary clarification, they shouldn’t be posting on a thread about an elite HS 800 runner’s upside in the mile.

With his mileage, there'd be no right to expect much faster just now but he looks like he's jogging. The endurance isn't fully there to break four just yet, as a sophomore, and he might get a lot stronger and become more of a 400/800 guy but it looks like he'll get it as a junior next year.
