She is already 18. That would be college freshmen age for many. A great time still but we have been here before with Cain and Tuohy. It's different with girls. It seems the timing of their physical maturity is a factor.
Her birthday is September 23, 2006. She's not overaged for her grade at all. She's older than probalby most but virtally everyone turns 18 during their senior year of HS just like she did.
I started college at 19.
Are U.S. Highschool grades based on birthdate by school year?
In Canada, it's usually birthdate by Calendar year. A student born in 2006 would typically have graduated in June of 2024. Only about half of students turn 18 in their final year of high school.
Next goal might be under 14:52 This Year, so she can have a time better than the NCAA Record while she is still in High School. More important than the High School Record she has the American Junior Record.
What is the rest of her season looking like? Will she have another shot at it?
Presumably
Regionals/State meet - 1600/3200/4x800?
Brooks PR/Nike outdoor - 1600? I assume she would like the record for that as well. 4:23-4:23 is likely in the cards.
She should decommit from BYU and just go pro with Taylor Made Elite. Unless she’s enthused by the prospect of taking a year off to go try and convert some Liberians or something
I would be surprised if Adidas does not at least make the offer. And considering one simple injury can have serious consequences, she should seriously consider it.
A U.S woman who could run 14:57 and hit the World Rankings Quota would have very likely been in Paris last year............
She may have a solid shot at being in Tokyo. Especially if she gets into a race where she doesn't have to lead at all and can run 14:50.
St. Pierre won't be at USA's this year (giving birth on May 8).
If Valby focuses on the 10, it comes down to Cranny, Schweizer, Morgan, and Hendegren (and maybe Shelby?) for the remaining 3 spots.
And there's no guarantee that both Cranny and Schweizer will opt to run the 5 in Tokyo.
Why in God's name would she want to go to Tokyo to get destroyed at Worlds and extend her track season into September?
That sounds like a TERRIBLE idea for me. Shut her down, get her ready for NCAA xc in college.
Thankfully, I think there is little chance she makes the team if she does try out. There are slew of US women - some of whom aren't even 5000 runners who can run 14:57.
Indoors we had Josette Andrews (14:44), Emily Mackay (14:45) and Whittni Morgan (14:48). Schweizer, Cranny and Houlihan can do it in their sleep.

I can’t think of anyone that went pro out of high school, and develop better than their peers. It’s a bad idea.

king999 (spelling of his handle) will tell you Kessler absolutely made the right decision.

She already has the American Junior Record, Here is the All Time Collegiate Absolute List BEFORE TONIGHT. Pamela Kosgei is now #2 and The BYU Top Runner who also ran 14:52 is now #3

if anything, the fact that she's already 18 means shes the real deal, because it's almost certain that she reached her physical maturity so the pitfall of getting a wider hip (and heavier) as she gets older is unlikely, which is what usually sets female phenoms back as they get into collage.
The wider hip takes up more space in the collage disturbing symmetry.

She will have a pretty good set up at BYU. Dad on faculty, her dream school, strong pro coaches Eyestone/Taylor, lots of young pros around for input. They will have a nice plan to deal with ncaa vs pro considerations.
She is already with Nike. They could look at other options, but staying Nike thru college NIL seems to make most sense.

Yes they are. Being born in September is normal but old for a class, being born in may or early June is young for a class, July and August are boarderline

I turned 18 the summer after high school. I had a couple friends with fall birthdays and that wasn’t as fun for them in university and Canadian drinking laws in our province (18). Turning 19 in September to me is…wild.
All the same, insane talent and performance. Props to her. Excited to see what she’ll do next.

Was still 17 at the end of cross country, freshman year in college.
