She was faster than 857. That was her time with 200m to go.
I know this is a foreign concept here, but they might have set up an 'en route' time, which would count as an official 3000 time.
If that clock had 8:57.xx, it will count as the official hs and U20 record, even faster than Cain winning World Junior 3000.
Similarly, they may also have an official 3200m en route time.
These en route times are, however, the actual times that count, not adjusted for any woulda, coulda, shoulda.
Not sure what point your trying to make.
Let me be clear. If they set up a 3000m en route camera, her time at 3000m will be faster than 857. The 857 is what the announcer said, but that is when she crossed the 200m to go mark. This would be 3000m if it was a 3200m but is 18.688m longer than 3000m for the 2 mile that the girls were running.

There is no "might" or "may have". At the same time that Arcadia announced they were switching the girls race from 3200 to 2 mile they also announced that would be automatically timing the 3000 and 3200 splits. It was also announced when the race was happening.
Seriously, it was a let down for me. After reading about her recent workouts I thought she was going to run under 9:30. Sounds crazy, but I think she is that fit right now.
I hope she takes one more shot at it.
...
She got the record and no sense in trying to lower it AGAIN without competition. She should start focusing on other outdoor goals, mainly the 5000m. I'm positive she could SOLO a 15:15 outdoors and with right pacing and competition I WOULDN'T be shocked if she threatened sub 15 minutes.
Hedengren has run Sadie Engelhardt right off the track and out of the limelight. Jane is the more talented of the two, in my opinion. I'm thinking that Engelhardt is intimidated and feels dominated, so she won't show up and race Hedengren. Ventura is not that far from Arcadia, and Engelhardt wasn't there. Hedengren flew in from Utah. So at this point there's only only one clear alpha distance runner.
The 2-mile is not a good distance for Engelhardt. A better matchup would be the mile.

Well, she's running a 5k on Thursday so we will find out very soon if she can "threaten sub 15 minutes."
Best female HS runner ever. Mary Cain a close second.
What she did at NXN this year was jaw dropping. I was there and the conditions were abysmal and she set the course record.
Mary Cain was ninth in the world as a junior in high school. 4:04 is at least as impressive as 15:13, and I think she held the record in everything from 800 to 5000 simultaneously.
She also suffers from not having her senior year accomplishments technically count as "high school." If they did, her 1000m time would be 3 seconds faster than the NCAA record to this day and her hs mile time wouldn't have been surpassed in the NCAA until this year, by a 25-year old
Cain, Tuohy, and Hedengren are surely the top 3 in some order
and i think they said 8:57 at the 3000m split, which is also a record i think
hard to even comprehend how great Hedengren is right now but im so glad i decided to watch tonight
Yeah this was just old fashioned, gnarly, "I'm just so much better", meaty running - it was Daniel Komen'esque.
And I'm going to say it - after watching pro's f--k around last week "for a hundred grand" (like we heard about 37 times a day on the broadcast), to watch this race in particular was such a breath of fresh air and so nice to watch. Every now and then it's funny how kids become the role models for stuff in life versus the consensus other way around.
Hedengren obviously has a bright (especially immediate) future in the sport.
I was in attendance at Mary Cain's 9:38 record in Boston and that was unbelievable to watch, it was so far out there I thought nobody would break that for decades. And this girl goes and knocks it down by 4 seconds just 12 years later!
Sounds like Jane Hedengren is making a clear case for greatest female HS runner of all time?

The clear top-4 are #1 Decker, #2 Cain, #3 Fairchild (XC GOAT), and #4 Hedengren.
Decker would have competed and possibly medaled in the 800m in Munich in '72 as a 14-yo. Remember, after the Olympics, she traveled to Minsk and defeated the Soviet woman who had just won silver in Munich. She broke several world records as a 15/16-yo, but then injury (I think compartment syndrome?) derailed any chance to compete in Montreal in '76. It would have been her second Olympics as a high schooler! Just ridiculous.
Cain, of course, became the youngest American to ever qualify for a World Championship team when she was 17. She then went on to finish 9th in the WC Final. She won the World Junior Championship in the 3000 a year later and also broke the world junior record in the 1000m.
Fairchild is the GOAT of cross country. On an 80-degree day, she set a Balboa Park record that still stands 35 years later and obliterated Deena Kastor, Amy Rudolf, and Jen Rhines that day (combined 8x Olympics, 7x NCAA Champs), all by over a minute. She then finished 3rd at the World Junior Cross Country Championships, beating Paula Radcliffe, Gete Wami, Gabby Szabo, and Kastor. As a junior, she won Footlocker over Kastor, Rudolph, and Carol Zajac and placed 12th at the World Junior Cross Country Championships, beating Kastor, Tegla Loroupe, and Carla Sacramento.
All three of these runners not only crushed US competition, but they also made their mark globally as high schoolers.
Hedengren leads the chase pack, but don't discount Leachman. She was beating Hedengren a year ago and when she comes back, maybe she will again.
It means a lot. But a better runner is just better.
But the conversation is greatest of all time. Full career has to factor. Drew Griffith probably beats just about anyone in history if they hypothetically lined up against him at brooks pr last year (maybe not Kessler but that might be it), but that doesn’t make him the goat.
