Considering every single college race is faster than what Matthew ran in Rio, i honestly feel he should have his medal revoked. Plain and simple. It's common sense.

Just to put things in perspective, the winning 1500 time in Rio was 23 WHOLE SECONDS SLOWER than last summer in Paris. This is enormous for a 1500. At that level, anything over 5 seconds is a massive differential.
What factors do you think contributed to this? Coastal heat and humidity?
Do you believe centrowitz deserves the same caliber of legacy bragging rights as Cole Hocker?
Id argue Centrowotz had a tougher win because everyone in the race was still with the pack 100m to go. Cole really got lucky that Kerr was too worried about Jakob and blew his wad early.
This is my favorite race of all time. Blew my mind. Could not believe Centro controlled it from beginning to end and was still able to finish it out his way. Never was anyone so composed.
That race was an alltime tactical masterclass. The thing is Centro was not favored to win in a reasonably paced race OK but even if everyone knew it would be won in 3:50... Centro still would not have been favored. The fact he held off Makhloufi under those conditions was really surprising. Slow 1500 races sre normally won by the guy with the best 1k PR which Makhdaddy had by miles.... as well as his 1:42 800 at the same games.
Makhloufis famous 2015 workout video in which he opens his session with an even split 1:44 800 had no purpose other than to intimidate the opposition....but that certainly showed he was the best MD athlete in the world at that time. Kudos for Centro for not allowing any of that to get into his head and being decisive at every key point in the race

Perfect tactical race. 50.x last lap.
Google the runners that Centrowitz beat. ALL total stud runners, including a super fast 800m runner who was an Olympic silver medalist and gold medalist in 1500m. Also a 3:26 guy was in the race.
the race was stacked and the superstars didn’t race as smart as Centro.
before super shoes and the field was a bunch of 3:2x guys…so not like he beat a mediocre field.
people on here need to chill... - the reason why it was much slower is because it was a tactical race, where the runners go slower for the first few laps then sprint the last lap, essentially all relying on the fact that they are the ones who can kick the best
Can we please stop calling slow AF races tactical? There are no tactics involved if you are reducing the race to a final lap kick, where it is a flip of the coin who has the best kick.

Google is not capable of answering the o.p.s questions. All that Google can do is provide quick links to results, and many times even those are not true or accurate. Google and search engines are not capable of answering technical questions, because artifical intelligence is nothing but a most-popular answer sort of algorithm.
Many, if not most, things on Google are not even true. Including the430milers real age and where he graduated highschool from and the personal life of allie Ostrander .

It was not a “flip of the coin”. Because of his strategy throughout the race, Centrowitz guaranteed that he would be at the front in lane one when the final lap kick started. Conversely, Kiprop, who had the fastest PR, was badly boxed in. And Makhloufi, who actually had the fastest kick, was forced all the way out into lane three on the final turn.

How about all racers must agree to sub 4 pace or none of them get a medal

No one cares about your opinion. Sit and kick races like Rio are part of track. If you don't like it, then find a new sport. Stop whining that the rest of the world doesn't cater to your preferences.

I've been racing competitively since the 90s and i know the field always goes out at a different pace. Sit and kick races definately add a few seconds, but not 23 worth in a middle distance race. 23 seconds is something you would see in a sit and kick 10k or higher. This tells me that in Rio, there were other factors besides just a sit and kick slow field, such as environmental, wind, heat, etc.
I'll give yall maybe 4 seconds MAX due to super spike innovation, but that's about it. Centro will always have his gold, but he's no 327 guy like hocker. His pr is 330 and that was in perfect conditions.
No one wanted to lead and everyone believed their best placing would come with a sprint at the end. Watch the race on YouTube.
In the specific race, there were few athletes who were both fit and should NOT have trusted their kicks. Ronald Kwemoi was one maybe and he fell. Iguider was another and I think he probably should’ve done more at the front. But who amongst the heavy hitters of Makhloufi/Centrowitz/Kiprop/Souleiman do people identify saying “what an idiot that guy should’ve made it honest!”

You can't possibly be this stupid. Oh wait, maybe you can.

"Tactical" can refer to tactics, which is the art of arranging forces or maneuvering to achieve a specific goal.”
Centrowitz was probably the only runner in the race with a plan (tactic) that day.
you seem to think any runner who could run 3:45-3:50 could qualify for the Olympics, make it through the rounds, hold off a bunch of 3:2x 1500 guys, one of which is a 1:42 800m guy, run 50.x, and the outcome would be luck like flipping a coin.
All you’re saying is that you don’t like it. Just write that. But if you don’t appreciate what it takes to do that, you are clueless about competitive running.

There was a pretty persuasive argument a couple pages ago that the Kenyans had a plan to push the pace from 800m out that was disrupted by Kwemoi’s fall.
I think to win Kiprop had to take the lead himself at that point. Instead he adapted poorly to the failure of his plan, and missed out on the medals.
By contrast Centrowitz reacted very well to Suleiman finally getting around him on the third lap, and was able to reassert his position at the front, which was where he needed to be to hold off Makhloufi.
The Kenyans are usually the guys who keep the pace honest. But watch around 1:50 in the race...
Asbel Kiprop surges from last to the front and it looks like Ronald Kwemoi, his teammate, was trying to go with him. But Kwemoi trips and goes down pretty hard. Kiprop doesn't notice that Kwemoi went down. Kwemoi recovers from his fall and sprints to catch back up to the pack. But to me, it is clear that Kwemoi got the wind knocked out of him and may have been slightly injured by the fall.
Again, Kiprop doesn't notice that his teammate went down. I believe that Kwemoi was supposed to take the lead. When Kwemoi doesn't take the lead, Kiprop slows down and tucks in behind the leaders in the inside lane. Kiprop will remain severely boxed in for the rest of the race which can be frustrating and exhausting. To me, Kiprop clearly thought that Kwemoi would take the lead at any second and make the pace honest. But Kwemoi is obviously compromised and unable to fulfill his duty.
Kiprop has to slow down just before the last lap and fall all the way to the back of the back, move to the outside after getting bumped a couple times, and then make a big move to catch back up to Centro. It was the only way to get out of his box.
On the final lap, Centro, Willis, and Makhloufi are fresh. But Kiprop is tired from being boxed in and having to sprint twice already to get himself in a decent position. Kwemoi tried to kick, but ends up buried in last place by 5 seconds.
Cliffs: The Kenyans are usually the ones to make the pace honest. Kwemoi's fall ruined their plan. It still would have been a slowish race, but definitely not 3:50.
I think this is fair to assume. Also worth noting that the fall was 100% Souleimans fault if I remember right. He moved suddenly without looking at all and took out Kwemois legs. Souleiman was no worse than the third fittest in the field probably but he also bungled his pass on Centrowitz by letting him swim move back to the lead. Since he was a Jama Aden guy maybe it’s for the best he way underachieved at global championships.
