Article says "The suspect was arrested on suspicion of smuggling approximately 12 pills containing marijuana by sending them from a U.S. airport to Osaka's Kansai Airport using an international courier service on Feb. 19."
That sounds much worse than just "forgetting" about them in your carry-on. Sending them by courier means it was 100% intentional and you knew it was wrong. Didn't he brag on a podcast once about traveling with THC or CBD and "nothing bad happening yet"? Yikes.
Is anybody able to play his podcasts on Spotify? I was trying to find the pinpoint reference of when he is talking about the gummies but it seems that they've been taken down... It's probably evidence in his trial at this point.
Up to 7 yrs. Japan and Asia in general has some strict cannabis laws.
fairly lenient by asian standards... many countries like camobida, indonesia, sri lanka, previously thailand, china etc have signs at customs that possession of narcotics (yes this includes weed) is punishable by up to death.... unlikely to get such a sentence but up to 7 years isn't much by the standard of other countries in the region.
They still play on YouTube but if you compare the episodes listed on his YouTube channel to the ones listed on Spotify, the recent ones talking about Osaka and Japan are all missing and the last episode is his Houston marathon one, nearly two months ago.
If he was having problems previously with his USA visa (I remember reading about it) - then there is no chance for him to come back to the States after this.
All research on successful drug policy shows that treatment should be increased, and law enforcement decreased, while abolishing mandatory minimum sentencing.
explain why countries with extreme drug policy (middle east and asia) have far fewer drug problems?

The US should have drug laws like this. Would end the fentanyl crisis in a year. Our tolerance for drugs is a weakness and results in high overdose rates and crime.
Amen. 27 people in this thread are fent addicts apparently.
In a recent podcast episode, Fox explained he typically travels with THC gummies to help manage his anxiety and sleep, acknowledging that many countries are lenient regarding THC products for personal use. “I travel with THC gummies, and most countries don’t care, but Japan is different—they tend to search you every time,” he said. Fox noted that he avoided bringing gummies into Japan, aware of the country’s strict drug laws. After his February marathon, he spent a few days skiing in the mountains before becoming inactive on his social media accounts.

reminds me to be careful going to Singapore, Malaysia, especially.
Japan .... well, they are a great bunch, but are in the dark ages grouping handful med cannabis and athlete with hard drugs dope dealer and the headline writers are the ones that need jail time.
I say this as an occasional cannabis user: this is such an idiotic and entitled move.
You wanna get high so bad that you’re going to pay a courier service to try to smuggle drugs through a Japanese airport? That’s insane. It’s stressful just thinking about trying to set that up, and for what? To get high on foreign soil. No idea what the probability of success on that kind of operation is, but he had to know it was risky.
I do sympathize a bit as I wish they’d just throw it away and give him a hefty fine, but that’s not how the world works and you gotta grow up and realize that it’s really really dumb to try to pull something like this.
Japan has the Three-Blind Mice system of 3 Judges, 99% conviction rate, no jury, no parole.
You have to study Shinto & Buddhist texts, explain why you are a criminal, explain how you reformed yourself, cry balling out with snot flowing out of your nose, apologize like you mean it, to get out of prison.
Otherwise you stay in jail until you adhere to the norms of Japanese society.
