If I walked downtown in broad daylight and proceeded to whip it out and pee in an alley and then shout like a crazy person at people dining outside, I would (rightfully) be arrested and taken to jail within about 5 minutes. Likewise if I laid across the sidewalk blocking everyone's path and made threatening comments to passers by. Yet I see these same behaviors every day from the homeless, and the cops do nothing.
Why the double standard?
Because the local law enforcement and justice systems can't squeeze any money out of destitute homeless people.
The homeless are the privileged people in America?
Not the billionaires
For once I agree with Newname.
Homeless people have to pee. They do not have homes (hence the name) with accompanying toilets to use. So they pee where they can.
What would OP suggest?
I also happen to agree with Newname for once. Do you think being homeless is a privilege? You are welcome to donate all of your assets to charity, live on the street, and enjoy the same "privilege." In some sense, this is the way Jesus indicated to get eternal life.
The vast majority of homeless people have an addiction or a mental illness, often both. You should look at it as a health condition. If your solution is to just ship everybody to El Salvador, why not do the same for cancer patients on Medicare: at the end of the day, curing cancer is extremely expensive and a much bigger drag to society, and most of them are going to die anyway, they may as well die in El Salvador.
Once you start to look at the problem as a health problem, the solution becomes a bit more clear, but it requires building infrastructure to provide some sort of housing and treatment facilities allowing for voluntary and involuntary treatment, depending on the conditions. Unfortunately, spending money on the homeless is political kryptonite, so we jail them, which, at the end of the day, is both very expensive and not very effective.
If I was a homeless person (LOL) I would be making my way to california asap. It's a paradise for homeless and illegals out there. Great weather and lots of free goodies.

My suggestion is that people that are sympathetic to the plight of the homeless should put signs outside their homes letting the homeless know that they can use the bathroom or find temporary shelter in their homes when the weather is bad.
How many of you are in favor of this? For those not in favor (remembering that the sign is purely voluntary), can you say why?
Hello, Rea1 Obvi! When will your sign be going out?
Because the prison system can’t even deal with them. Could you imagine a cell block with like 25 percent schizophrenics. I’m at a loss at how to deal with it, but the prisons don’t seem to want them, might cut into their profit margins. I do wish they were off the street being medicated to some degree, it would be better for everyone.
Putting them down may be the way to go for the sake of society. Germany put down the sick (mentally and physically) in their golden age (1930's), not even counting the Jews in the 1940's. With dementia increasing (both of our last two President's are mentally diminished by age) it may become necessary to implement that strategy for the elderly. We could also include the Democrats/Libs, as they are certainly not welcome in our modern society. In the interest of cleaning up the streets it is the only economically feasible solution as prisons are too costly. I guess we could bring back slavery (certainly chain gangs) to keep these unfortunates busy, but that it likely too politically sensitive to enact.

Cute note. Stup!d, but cute.
I have let many homeless people use the bathrooms in my house. I have also fed many of them. And I have let some sleep in my house on more than one occasion.
I am sure that you too have done more than your share.
But at the end of the day, we, as a society should be treating the homeless with compassion. I am quite certain that this is what Jesus would say. And I am quite certain that He would condemn those who think that harassing, arresting and deporting the most downtrodden of us is appropriate.

Yes, of course! What better system to emulate than Nazi Germany?
Many of them are essentially not even sentient beings. If you ask them “what is your name?” and “where are you right now?” they couldn’t provide a coherent answer.
What’s the difference between sleeping in a subway station and sleeping in an El Salvadoran facility for an individual who is essentially devoid of self-awareness?
Well, it is like a drug induced light switch of self-awareness. The show Severance comes to mind.
You are right that when they are in zombie-mode, slumped over, half in the bike lane and crapping their pants, then yes, they are devoid of self-awareness.
But self-awareness is not a criteria for god-given and inalienable human rights as outlined in the Constitution. We still give people who are brain damaged, sleeping, in comas, or otherwise mentally incapacitated the same rights as other people.
The point is, just because they are "out of it" doesn't mean they give up their rights as citizens and human beings. Christian ethics doesn't hinge on "are they self-aware?" or "have they earned our kindness?"
p.s. The real question is why do we have so many mentally ill people (schizos) and drug addicts in our country? Why are our people "worse" than the people of other countries?
They can't work. These aren't the jolly but lazy hobos of the 1930s. These are people with serious mental illnesses who use fent and meth to self-medicate and then engage in tons of crime to fund their drug addiction. Their skin, teeth, and hygiene rule out "working with others" in a normal working environment.

He was being sarcastic. But sadly, in today's America, it is hard to tell if someone is joking when they say things like "Well, Germany in the 1930s had some good ideas..." Yikes!
Oh you think empathy is low here my friend, try India, home of Buddha. You'll experience a level of not giving a f*ck that ascends the 10th chakra.
And of course that completely justifies the lack of empathy shown on this thread.
I'm just sayin, as far as human history goes (and every other animal) we live in possibly the most empathetic culture ever, and the people here are probably more empathetic than any people you'd ever meet in history any where on earth. And on that note, your lack of boundaries isn't really empathy although you've convinced yourself it is. Your lack of boundaries isn't cool or hip, it doesn't make you cool with the kids, it doesn't make anyone like you, it doesn't put you on the "right side of history". Oh and it doesn't make you attractive. And it doesn't really help anyone.
