There are multiple people who are shooting for this. They use Wandrer App and CityStrides. This guy is currently 7th on Wandrer and 5th on City Strides.
Good for him, but this is like Hobbs Kessler saying he wants to win a gold medal. Great, but like, so are others.
Lived and ran in cities all my life. Nothing has ever happened to me while running around. And I go everywhere. As long as he follows basic precautions such as running during the day and not drawing a ton of attention to himself, he'll be fine. The idea of you getting randomly jumped or shot for just running by reeks of someone who has little experience living in the city.
He should try this in Harlingen TX where I live and see if he makes it out without getting mauled by someone’s lose dog…I stick to major roads and parks lol.
1) Joabe Barbosa says he doesn't even like running: "I don't really like running, I think it's quite boring."
2) Is this safe? I know the media tries to terrorize us about crime but are there any Chicago natives on here - do you think he'll finish it without being a victim of a crime?

I lived in Chicago for a decade. I've run all through a lot of the sketchy neighborhoods in the southside of Chicago, mainly on my own, and nobody ever bothered me.

This is accurate. Other than maybe getting heckled, which can happen in any neighborhood, this guy's going to be fine if he's running during daylight hours.
Funny thing is, I get heckled the most by teenagers yelling things out of cars or whatever more so than people on the street in minority neighborhoods. I will even get encouragement from strangers I pass. Because most adults realize it's stupid to yell at random people getting their workout on.
Yep, exactly this. I live in a suburb but not the city itself. The tougher the neighborhood, the more you're either ignored or encouraged. Every negative interaction I've had on a run or ride has been in an affluent area.
I will say that the best heckling I've ever received was at 10 PM near a low-income apartment complex. It was a summer night and a little kid, maybe 10 years old, called from his porch "I see you jogging! You think you be runnin' but you ain't." Almost killed me from laughing.
All that to say that this guy will almost certainly be fine. Not sure if this has been done in the city before, but I know it has been in some surrounding towns and suburbs. I love the idea.

Could do if he keeps a low profile and goes early. I did that in San Francisco (got punkedvin the Castro), and Berkeley (no probs), but got run out of the Fruitvale in Okland by some old souls who didnt like seingvan old white guy in tights!
I live in Philly which obviously isn't Chicago, but yeah he'll be fine. He's much more likely to get hit by a car than a victim of any crime. There's no reason to mess with someone running.
I spent a lot of time running in deep west philly too (think high 50s into the 60s, not university city). Worst that ever happened was some guy wanted to race me. Guess I saw a dead dog once.
You get heckled and harassed way worse running where poor white people live than poor black people.
Be careful on the southside of the city, place is warzone. A disgrace. People dying daily. For what? Nonsense. Politicians silent. BLM leaders too busy spending donations. Virtue signalers quiet. Mainstream media not interested. Shame
Chicago as a political punching bag for the right needs to stop. These conversations are never rooted in the systemic problems that have decreased economic opportunities. Redlining set up the mess that is most major cities. These problems were intentionally created & then we blame people for living where they have to live.
I spent a # of years on the southside of Chicago. It's fine. Crime goes down with economic opportunity & investment but look at where the money in Chicago goes. Look at tif money. Look at where the grocery stores are.
Throwing around BLM like a ton of people living comfortably on the north side didn't make their money by ripping people off through sub prime mortgages & the like. Throwing that around while the current president is tanking the economy while just offering buzz words to put the focus on a whole bunch of things that don't matter while the rich accumulate more & more wealth & the executive branch seeks more & more power. Wake up. Stop talking about Chicago because you're told to.
