To be fair I’ve expressed the same message more eloquently on several threads and STILL been slaughtered for it by arrogant types that regard anyone who doesn’t share their views, or who can’t run their times, or faster, as lesser beings. There are too many on here who get emotionally triggered when you dare criticise their favourite activity. They are too emotionally invested in an activity that defines their self worth to see it being questioned in any way, however the message is delivered.
Why would you want to criticize another person's favorite activity?
Either you are being obtuse, or you are missing the point entirely…

So in the absence of an actual answer you go for an insult. Okay, I'm both obtuse and missing the point entirely so explain to me why you want to criticize another person's favorite activity.
The winners of my local road races (men in the 15:00 range, women in the 17:00) always look like hot garbage. They run 100 mile weeks while working a 9-5. They're underweight, weathered, stressed, neurotic. Grinding out mile after mile just for a goofy Turkey Trot victory, knowing that one day age will inevitably catch up. Bleak.
Dial it back a few minutes and you see the Chads and qt3.14 grills and so on. Normal, healthy, fun, free. Just chillin, just runnin. Superior physiognomy and superior health markers.
The modal human should really just be doing moderate exercise at best. Some light lifting and simple cardio. Lift objects and set them down. Go out and run or bike or swim. Simple as. Eat well and sleep well.

Agreed. The difference becomes stark in the over 40 age groups. I'm a 64 year old who plods along to a 5K in 26. I look a helluva lot better than the 22/23 guys my age. Mrs. DanM thinks so too.

If you think that me claiming that you were being obtuse is an insult, then you’ve lived a sheltered life.
You do realise that criticising an activity isn’t criticising the person doing it don’t you? Just checking. Only a person who’s self worth was totally wrapped up in the activity would think so.
Im not actually criticising the activity per se, but instead just the notion that the only reason that people run is to enter races and post times and aim for PB’s.
There is a strong consensus on this forum that anyone not posting times and entering races has nothing to offer, as though they are some sort of sub human, not worthy of consideration. Heck there are those on here who don’t even consider anyone’s opinion to be worthy, unless they can post a certain time or faster. I can’t be doing with that elitism…and that is where my criticism lies. And you know it’s true…unless the term “hobbyjogger” wouldn’t be bandied around so much. A derisory term if ever there was one, especially as it is used by some.
Funny how the true elites don't have that derisory attitude, but it’s the elite wannabes where it is prevalent.

In your earlier post you specifically said "criticizing someone's favorite activity." Now you say you aren't criticizing the activity per se. Which is it? And maybe it's because I've had a really sheltered life but if I call someone obtuse I'd generally think I'm insulting them. Come to think of it, if I tell someone they must have had a sheltered life I'd probably think I'm insulting them.
There is something of a consensus here that if you're going to post something about training for maximum results or race strategies and so on the opinion of people who have had actual experience and some success at those things carries more weight than someone who hasn't. But we all know people who do some running and maybe even enter races who do not do it to run as fast or place as high as they can and no one considers those people sub human. And incidentally, I too despise the term "hobby jogger."

I was asking if you were being obtuse…not calling you that…please read it again.
There are some on here including me, who don’t run to race, but for health and general enjoyment. I’ve lost count of the times I’ve been “criticised” or called on this forum for stating that. There are clearly some who look down on others who either don’t or can’t post certain times. So am I not allowed to do the same? Just because my goals and priorities are different? Who made you arbiter of all things acceptable?
Just because someone can run a certain time doesn’t necessarily make them the “authority”. Two things that highlight this.
1) There are people who can run good times on here…who still ask for advice. Why would they need to do that…if they can run impressively fast?
2) Why would an athlete need a coach, if they are fast enough to know everything?
Lets not forget that someone running for time has different goals to me. I’m running for health. The approach, using the same activity, has subtle and not so subtle differences.
This site attracts a lot of young men with few social skills and manners plus a lot of grizzled older men filled with anger and unmet ego needs. Running has always been popular with Type A personalities obsessed with goals and keeping score. Most people evolve towards other life pursuits and definitions as they age - career, marriage, parenting, mentorship, or just enjoying pursuits for the sake enjoyment. Some choose to define themselves and validate their worth through performance. Neither is necessarily wrong but some performance oriented runners still need to feel superior for reasons or to salve some emotional shortcoming.
It’s just running. We all get older and slower at some point. We’re all going to die. Enjoy it on your own terms while you can. Some people never get to because of disease, infirmity, accident, spinal injuries, or dumb genetic luck. Keep it in perspective and don’t sh*t on people because they are slower or don’t take it as seriously as you.

That’s just it… I don’t take it seriously. I’m with you on what you just said…
The beauty in life is you can do whatever you want. If someone pursues fast times and trains hard for it...what's it to you? Not to mention do you think they care how they appeal to you? I'm a 40 year old runner and the least of my concern is how I look to some stupid, ugly man.
I've read it several times and I still think I'd be insulting someone if I'd said that to them. As to the rest of your post, I see countless posts here from people who say they like to run but only want to do so much of it because they do it for enjoyment and doing more even if it made them a bit faster isn't something they want to do. I respect them and rarely see those people getting criticized.
One of my favorite running quotes came from Jack Foster who once answered a reporter's question about how he trained by saying "I never train. I just go for a run each day." Jack always said if he didn't enjoy running he wouldn't run. If you're saying similar things here and getting criticized I suspect it may be because you come off as sanctimonious about it and perhaps are insulting people who are a lot more serious than you even if you don't believe you are.

Oh wow… you say I’m insulting you by asking if you are obtuse…but then you speculate that I am possibly sanctimonious.
Is it only me? Or does anyone else detect the heavy dose of irony here? 😂
You mean when you get caught out and have to dig your way out of the hole you’ve found yourself in sharpish…😂
I could have gone your route and said that I said you seem sanctimonious but didn't call you that and if you felt insulted you must have had a sheltered life. But I'm still pretty sure you insulted me and felt like I should even things up.

No…you didn’t say I “seem” sanctimonious, which implies that it is open to interpretation and that there may be some doubt. Instead you stated that I “come off” as sanctimonious, which removes the doubt and is in effect, worse.
You might want to put that spade down and stop digging that hole now…because the irony is just too thick.
