Sorry, that was not a legitimate sub 4 mile. The super shoe time conversion requires a runner to run under 3:58.00 to be recognized by athletics aficionados as a legitimate sub 4 miler. Kid came close but didn’t do it. Better luck next time.
Good old NZ - it's a great thing the race was broadcast but man, we have to work on the presentation here - onscreen timing was completely useless and the commentary was well, let's just say nobody is putting Steve Cram or Tim Hutchings out of a job anytime soon.
That aside, think I got a good run on the splits - these are all for Ruthe.
60.4 at 409
1.59.9 at 809
3.00.5 at 1209
and I hand timed him off the broadcast at 3.58.1 which is right in line with his FAT time of 3.58.35 (don't forget that El Guerrouj fans... ;)
So the final three 400m splits were 59.5, 60.6, 57.6.
Great achievement - happy for Sam, Ben and Jess, Craig and the full crew. Shoutout to PC for helping put the meet on. Onwards and upwards!

Anyone who downvotes what I said is not an athletics aficionado. Real athletics aficionados know what I said is true.
I agree 3:57 is probably abt where he is, insane that a 15 year old isn't just in sub-4 shape, but is well under sub-4 shape. And honestly, with a 3:44 1500 and a 53 last lap, 3:55 high might be in the cards. I feel dumb saying 3:55 high for a 15 year old's first sub-4, but Sam Tanner has a 3:31 pb and just ran a 3:51 mile a couple weeks before Ruthe TIED him.
Tanner is in fantastic shape, and I get that it was a championship race with a big kick, but would we not expect Ruthe to be in similar fitness? Like ok, sure, maybe knock off 1 or 2 seconds to be safe, but he's still in 3:53 territory. Knock off another 2 and that's still 3:55. A 4s fitness difference seems like a lot to me but what do i know, maybe Ruthe has better speed bc he's younger? But Tanner ran 1:46.1 last season, so if Ruthe has better speed, would he be closer to 1:46-7? Anyway all that to say idk I'll be happy as long as he runs 3:59
Jesus I just looked up Ruthe and he was born in 2009 what the heck is this what old people feel like
you don't have the slightest f*cking clue how it feels to be old
Brilliant running by Ruthe and great sportsmanship by Sam Tanner. Tanner did a good job of peacemaking and encouraging his younger training partner.
I’m a bit confused by Tanner finishing the race, though I assume he did what he was told either way and it made for a cool photo/celebration. Just not something you typically see in a clear record attempt.

The story is being covered all over the International press, including CNN and the BBC. He could become as famous as Gout Gout now.
Apart from being great for the sport to have a new middle-distance star like this, it means that Armstrong's doping accusations here wont show up on the first page of Google for his name anymore.

This isn't wrong but also not totally warranted either - Hayden is usually pretty well informed, and presumably does all his comms work for free. Hard to blame them for being on the back foot for a 15 minute meet on a Wednesday evening
It wasn't all that long ago that you'd have to wait for the next issue of Track and Field News to find the result.
Yeah I remember those days. Seb Coe would break a world record and I would find out about it two months later - no joke.
I was a subscriber (in another country of course), back in the late 70's and early 80's...you knew about world records from mainstream news, but had to wait for T&FN about tyhree weeks later for detail and that of other races
