For those saying no one is cut...schools could cut immediately or they can wait until they have to cut before next season. You could carry a bunch of track athletes into the fall if you really wanted, and cut to your number right before the first meet (doesn't mean coaches will or should do this).
As I said before, the NCAA made scholarship contracts be written for four years. But, schools could (and often have) written those contracts in a way to avoid four years of guaranteed money to athletes. Often time years down the road are contractually set to zero and a good coach sells this by saying "you have to earn your money for your upper class years, by scoring".
A school can cut aid immediately if an athlete breaks team policy, enters the portal, voulentraily quits, or is academically ineligible. Otherwise, if the athlete enrolls they are entitled to their contracted scholarship. This does not mean the athlete can not be cut from the program.

This exactly. Schools have done this since the autonomy schools went to multi-year scholarships. It’s an easy way around it. Also, I believe the transfer portal window opens next week so programs are likely telling student athletes now whether they have a roster spot or not so they can transfer.
Good post. But I haven't seen any track scholarships with declining amounts. I have only seen a dozen or so which is a tiny fraction of the total so it may just be my limited exposure.
Meanwhile Texas just announced they are trying to fully fund all roster spots with full scholarships. That includes 45 scholarships for men’s track and 68 for women’s crew. There’s a soft block on the article below
Yes 35 for men, in line with the SEC mandate . As always XC scholarships are part of track so some of the 35 may be distance athletes. They are also funding 45 on the women's side... of which some will likely be distance athletes.
As always is false. The new rules make the sports completely separate.
technically, texas could also fund 10 xc scholarships but then those people could not run track since the limit for track is 35 (which they are also funding). that doesn't make sense to do so no, they are not separate.
Sorry - my error. 45 scholarships for women’s track and 35 for men. The 68 for women’s rowing still stuns me. How many rowers even compete? It can’t be more than 20 even when considering all their different boats.

Rowing and squash are two of the "wealthy whites folks programs".
There really is no US high school program for either sport, so it's all club and elite private prep schools.
68 womens rowing scholarships helps satisfy title ix, and many of these kids will be good students from exclusive prep schools.

I've posted this sentiment on another thread; but this article illustrates it.
The SEC schools generate too much revenue to not pay athletes and the Presidents and ADs think it is problematic to have well paid athletes mixed in with walk ons.
More than one SEC schools want to pay every athlete at least a full ride. But, while they are not necessarily looking to cut sports, they are not looking to have unwieldy rosters (the money isn't endless).
Thus, you are going to see small and well paid track teams emerge from the SEC. Because of Title IX, the women's teams will be a bit bigger. I have a feeling the Big10 will eventually follow suit or just resign to being inferior to the SEC in track.
They are completely separate. Football players sometimes throw shot or disk. Your logic would say that football and track are connected because track could only have 33 if a thrower and printer also do football. Every sport is now serrated. Ainsley Erzen for Arkansas does soccer and track. So thise sports are connected too.

The guy explained it to you. If you can't or don't want to acknowledge it that's on you. Those who run XC and are on scholarships will have track scholarships. Hence they are not separate.

Yes. To be 100% clear if a football player does Track they count towards that 45. You have to declare a roster prior to the first competition of the season. Once that roster is declared it is locked you cannot add people to it don’t even look at the scholarships that’s a small part of it. Roster limits have been imposed.

Currently, it’s the other way around. A football player on scholarship can run track and not count towards the 18, but a track runner on scholarship cannot play football. The difference was football was a headcount sport where everyone was on scholarship. Now, every sport is a headcount sport. I would imagine there will be rules so schools don’t use non football scholarships for football players
I don't know why so many do multiple sports in High School and only one in College? Playing an alternate sport is better than doing nothing during your main sports off season, Many off season Athletes Party (Get Drunk and more) and as they say an Idle Mind is the Devils Workshop so Some off Season Athletes get in Trouble at this time, Me I did Cross Country and Wrestling SIMUTANEOUSLY as Cross Country Practice was at 5 A.M. and Wrestling at 3 P.M. At Oklahoma State and I did Track after Wrestling was over, And In The Summers went to the Boxing Club and had some Amateur Fights. I had to stay focused and had no time AND I was to Tired to get in trouble. College kids have too much Energy, I think at least The Air Force Academy reguires ALL Students to play a Sport All Schools should Emulate The Air Force Academy in this way.
Also you don't have to worry about paying The University Back or have Loan Debt when you Play a Sport/s

The roster is capped at 85. The sports will all be treated the same. A track runner who plays football counts against the cap for both sports but can only have one scholarship. The concept seems to really be confusing some people here. The scholarships aren't capped directly but essentially are. A soccer player running track counts against both sports. A football player running track counts against both. And a cross country running track counts against both. But all 3 of those athletes get only one scholarship. The sports are separate.
