Timothy Cheruiyot, Emmanuel Wanyonyi and Asbel Kiprop...
No, he’s pure 800/1500m. If he ran World XC, he would be a back-packer.
You’re right, the guy literally listed runners who run in the short course XC races, which is more akin to what they race on the track. No way they would be a factor in the standard 10k XC race.
Yeah, and he got ripped on here by many, many posters who claimed he was "done". So now he's "doing it" and he can't comment on his own thoughts? BS dude!
I was called a moron for saying he's far from over....but now they naysayers have slid back under their slimy rocks.
My point is that he shouldn't be telling us he sucks and that he's disappointed when he runs 7:35 in a season opener and then 3:46, only losing to the Olympic bronze medalist in a new world record time. These are great performances for him and obviously he wants to win but running 3:46 and breaking the old world record shouldn't be "pretty disappointing" for someone at his level. Saying that it is makes him come across as cocky and unhappy.
World Indoors has always been a minor meet to most pros. A few elite pros always compete when it works/makes sense for them (a young Hobbs, Centro in Portland, Kerr in Edinburgh, etc.) but once athletes reach a certain status, they’d rather run races that get them closer to their ultimate goal- qualifying for OG/WC unless the stars align.
Teare gains very little by traveling around the world to WI (if he qualified) but stands to gain quite a bit if he gets the 5K standard on the fastest track in the world next weekend. Easy choice. Hobbs already has standards and is shooting for a medal outdoors, thus going to China does not make sense. And on and on. But I bet Eric Holt and Sam Prakel will try to qualify!
Sorry if this doesn’t align with many message board folks’ priorities, but this is how the sport is set up.
As far as a confidence booster, I feel Teare has more to gain running a really fast 5k at BU than he does running worlds. Teare is surely eyeing a PB, to beat Hocker, and to be #2 all time U.S. Sorry their not beating Grant's AR
I like the quote from Hobbs about focusing on racing over fast times, but his recent self-deprecation after two great races, 7:35 for 4th and 3:46 for second, shows that he has an unearned cockyness that is off-putting. He is still young and hopefully he is able to enjoy his self-improvement and have a little fun with the sport.
unearned cockyness yep
the behavior can be corrected. if ingrained at an early age, the prognosis for change is zero. that said, they can learn to "say the right thing"
in business and life, there are too many covert cocky narcissists of this behavior
these MFs are beyond annoying at the bare minimum
that was a little harsh?
i saw a full Hobbs interview, and he came off less foul. get what he's saying. he's out of the closet letting people know that he is going for #1 hard. no more aw shucks.
the thing is if you win and back up the talk, you are golden.
It's CRAZY to me that guys like Cooper Teare are skipping USAs to run BU. If Teare wants to make a team this year, he should try out for World Indoors.
WA could help by saying anyone who runs World Indoors is given the standard for outdoors but it's crazy to me that someone like Teare would skip this meet and / or World indoors.
This is an excellent example what is wrong with our sport compared to other sports. T&F or Athletics is the only sport* where the (super)stars of the sport can show up at random events/meets and set marks/results that actually matter. (Federer or Nadal didn't play a Challenger-series match when at their peak level, neither did Tiger Woods play of lower-tie golf tournament. Nonetheless some of the bigger stars of the sport show up at collegemeets (like at BU or Stanford in the 2010s).
It isn't easy to fix this problem, but I would make a distinction between meets were you can set records (all if they meet minimal requirements like timing, etc) and other meets were you can actually qualify or set qualifying marks for championships. The ranking system is supposed to do that, but auto-marks are problably still to easy. Maybe they should allow less time-standard in major championships and more athletes by ranking.
This will need a good consideration on how ranking points allotted becasue DL-places are limited and subject to the selection and preferences by meetorganizers. Maybe WA should put more emphasis on the second tier (gold label) events, so there's more opportunity to boost your ranking.
It ain't easy, but I endorse Rojo's call for 'we need more meets that matter'!
*(maybe swimming too, but I don't know that sport very well)
Didn’t Kessler specifically say he wasn’t going to China even if he makes the team?
And he should be criticized for that as well, particularly since he doesn't have the Grand Slam track excuse. I'm an equal opportunity criticizer.
At a minimum, there should be a dead period. No time qualifiers within 2 weeks of a US champs.
I agree with what Hobbs said but then he said he isn't running worlds because it's too far and too late after he criticized Fisher, Hocker and Nuguse for not running USAs. What's the point of running USAs if you aren't going to represent your country at World Indoors? Makes no sense

Beamish is world indoor champion. He couldn’t even get in the outdoor 1500m final if his life depended on it. And that’s the bottom line.

You get bonuses for this stuff, whether you go to World's or not. I was going to stay out of this but....for this meet(worlds indoors) you would have to train down, ship to China etc, etc. For a meet, quite frankly , nobody cares about, they just do not. World's Outdoors is a big target for any and every one. If guys want to run the GST thing, so be it. Is Hocker really going to run as many times as some have projected? I think not, not in a Wolrd's year. I think it is contrived and will fold shortly after this year.
Teare has a lot to prove, like can he even qualify for world indoors? Everybody else skipping we don't have doubts if they can make the team or even medal (Nuguse, Kerr, Fisher, Hocker, Hoppel). If he can't qualify for world indoors, he can kiss probably kiss world outdoors goodbye. This would be a big confidence booster for him if he qualified but if he can't put away Jacobs and/or Hacker in a 3k then idk if it's going to be any better in the 5k outdoors with a bunch of other pros and collegians.
I actually believe he can make the world team in the 5k. But clearly this guy has mental blocks during big championship races, otherwise I think he easily beats guys like Jacobs and Hacker. Dude was unstoppable in college, a lot of this sport is mental, if he overcomes that he can even come away with a US title.

You’re projecting.
Getting the standard is the most important factor for making the outdoor team, not a possible “confidence booster” (your words, not his) and you just never know what the future entails.
Parker Wolfe had plenty of confidence last year but he didn’t make the Olympic team. Why? No standard. That’s the same reason I thought he should have run the 5K at BU in December. He had a fantastic run but could have checked the standard box. They decided to wait and then he got sick and missed his next chance to run fast at BU.
Outdoor goes quickly and there are precious few chances to run really fast, stateside.

Wrong. The WIC are a prestigious competition where some of the greatest track and field athletes have participated in. If they choose not to run World Indoors, it’s because they are either dodging or not good enough to run it.
