It's CRAZY to me that guys like Cooper Teare are skipping USAs to run BU. If Teare wants to make a team this year, he should try out for World Indoors.
WA could help by saying anyone who runs World Indoors is given the standard for outdoors but it's crazy to me that someone like Teare would skip this meet and / or World indoors.

Didn’t Kessler specifically say he wasn’t going to China even if he makes the team?
In fairness to Teare and Hocker, they need the standard to get into that “big meet” in September. World athletics doesn’t give a damn if you finish top 3 and don’t have the standard or points. But I do agree that Teare should try for a world team. He could have regrets skipping these opportunities to make a world indoor team if he never makes an outdoor team ever again in this tough era of US distance running.
Hocker has reached the pinnacle of this sport so I don’t blame him for skipping us indoors. His goals are far much bigger than that. Adding US indoor titles isn’t really gonna boost his resume at this point all though it doesn’t hurt. Winning US outdoor titles and racking up medals in the 1500 and 5k should be his first priority then us/ world records should come second.

I agree but the problem is, to get to the big meets you have to have the times (the way they do the descending order list.
That marathon selection was a debacle with all the waiting and wondering and figuring.
I don't have a solution but it is a problem that has to be addressed.
Hobbs wants to run fast times AND rack up titles. Good for him.
China is disease-ridden, government officials spy on all foreign travelers, the food is awful, and the insane flights and time changes are disruptive to longer term training.

How many titles does he have?
precisely why he is saying it. Did that really go over your head?
I like the quote from Hobbs about focusing on racing over fast times, but his recent self-deprecation after two great races, 7:35 for 4th and 3:46 for second, shows that he has an unearned cockyness that is off-putting. He is still young and hopefully he is able to enjoy his self-improvement and have a little fun with the sport.

And he should be criticized for that as well, particularly since he doesn't have the Grand Slam track excuse. I'm an equal opportunity criticizer.
At a minimum, there should be a dead period. No time qualifiers within 2 weeks of a US champs.
I love this interview and Hobbs' outlook on racing vs. time trialing right now. It's very refreshing. Normally I would agree with you that yes, all the best athletes should set their eyes on world indoors, as it's a GLOBAL CHAMPIONSHIP! Just like they are peaking for another global championship also in east Asia later this year. However, he does make a good point- why is world indoors so late? March 22 is like four weeks after any other big indoor meets. Really confusing why they would pick then. It's tough feeling like the hosts are gonna get a watered-down world indoors after postponing it for... 5 years? Dialing in periodization really does matter, especially for American athletes who have to peak for outdoor trials. So I'm a little more sympathetic to the decision to not run world indoors. At least he's doing his part by doubling at USAs, versus others skipping it entirely.
You make a good point about him not having the excuse of Grand Slam track, though. So I'm not totally in defense of skipping global championships but think it's a little more defensible in this case. At least some of the GST athletes are taking that seriously as "big meets". Championship style racing with the prize money to back it up.

I like Hobbs and his sentiment is correct, but would he be saying it if he was a 5,000m runner? The fact is there are few if any domestic outdoor meets for a US runner to snag the 5,000 meter qualifier. Last year had LA but that looks unlikely to happen again. So then Teare has to hope he can get a lane in a Diamond League (dicey) or hit the qualifier in a B-level European meet with variable conditions, competition and pacing. That requires travel and luck. Until the sport cleans up the stupid qualifying system with quota reallocation, BU qualifying time trials are going to be a thing.
