An UNREAL performance. I never saw this coming. 3:48.32 is flat out flying.
I am a fan of Strand's by never saw him as a miler; more of a 3k type. That still may be where his sweet spot lies, but he is CLEARLY far better suited at the mile than I ever thought.
Going forward, my question would be...does he like his chances against Hocker and Nuguse at 1500m or against Fisher and Teare at 5000m? It's a tough call but he could sit and do no work at the longer distance. Beating the Olympic champ and a 3:43.97 miler seems a daunting task.
There’s a couple of things here. He has the Worlds standard for the 1500 now. The 5,000 one is no joke. He also has a good kick. All things being equal, is chasing a 5,000 mark worth it when at the NCAA level it’s probably better for him to run the 1500 anyway developmentally? He opens up the decision IF he mimics whatever Wolfe does to get the 5,000 standard. Otherwise he should go as far as he can in the 1500 this season at least through NCAAs.

I don’t think he’s running a 5k this spring. Wolfe would have run the 5k tonight but apparently he is injured. I don’t see many getting the 13:01 for the 5k. If I’m not mistaken Graham Blanks is the only American at this point to achieve it.

I also doubt that Strand will run a 5000 this spring, BUT I still think it might be easier to face Fisher, Teare and company at 5000m than to drop to 1500m and face Oly Champ Hocker and Mr. 3:43.97 (Nuguse). No free lunch either way.

I’d agree but as the UNC boys know too well, it’s about getting to the meet not just finishing top 3. 5,000 could be quite strong too considering Blanks’ trajectory and Nurs abilities in championship racing.
This is equivalent to 3:31.4, so guys like Spencer have run at the same level. And it is a long way to 2:28, not to mention 2:26.
I have not read far through the thread but I am sure that people have made this comparison
Spencer 3:31.81, Green 3:32.2. There’s a margin at the moment, but there are guys in the neighborhood. Spencer is currently not on form though, and it’s not there yet for Sahlmam/Kipkoech who are next up on PBs.

We are going to have a ncaa meet with like a dozen guys who have run sub 3:54 miles. Now maybe some bail for DMR or the 3k but that is going to be one tough event to win between surviving the heats and the however it plays out tactically…

In his interview today, coach miltenberg said wolfe got the norovirus and he's getting back to training, so not an injury
Before people lose their minds with conspiracy theories about how this is possible (there is already a doping thread comparing Strand to Katir), I think it is important to remember that a lot has changed in the last decade.
Guys like Strand are all benefiting from those changes: double threshold training, bi-carb, super-surfaces on super tracks, super shoes, professional coaching, transfer portals that allow the best kids to group together at the same schools, and a lot more.
I am stoked for Ethan Strand and I don't think it is fair to automatically assume he or any of this generation of NCAA stars are automatically doped just because they are running faster than Centro's era.
Maybe doping is a problem and I am just being naive, but until one of these elite NCAA guys gets popped, I am going to continue enjoying the show.

Every time I see a result like this from a young miler, I can't stop thinking about how fun it's going to be watching US championships the next five years. Plus, Birnbaum ran a 3:52 today at age 19. We're in the golden era of US men's mid-distance, and it's probably just going to get better over the next few years. I mean, even making a US final these next few years is going to be brutal.
bro seriously, our top 3 last year were top 5 in the world, and all like 24 or younger. People talk about the steeple being for people that couldn't cut it in the flat events, but at this rate, the LA 2028 800 and 5k teams are just gonna be made up of people who couldn't cut it in the 1500.
US Mid-D stars still approaching their primes Nuguse 25 (3:43 mile plus bronze) Hocker 23 (won some race in Paris, I think) Kessler 21 (5th at that race, 3:29) Strand 22 (3:48/7:30) Birnbaum 19 (3:52) Green 21 (3:32.2/3:50.74) Waskom 23 (3:33) (two-time NCAA champ and already made a US team) Sahlman 21 (3:33/3:52) Cook 22 (3:33) Murphy 22 (3:36/3:53) Houser 23 (two-time NCAA indoor title holder, 3:35/3:51)
Then there’s the old timers like Ciattei, Wynne, Prakel, Reniewicki, Teare, Holt, Engels, and Suliman.
That's 19 1500m runners who probably think they belong in every US final. Fuhgeddaboudit.

Just MAKING the final at USAs = a worthy accomplishment
