What does any sane American want with Greenland? Have you seen it? It's a wasteland.
Noone can survive there but the natives. The US already has military bases so no difference there.
Liar. If it is a wasteland, why would they call it Greenland? It will be become a popular tourist destination when Trumps build a five star hotel, casinos , and golf courses over there. MAGAA’s Mecca.
I would venture that the desire for purchase is likely a combination of a couple things- for sure a strategic location in the arctic, especially as the ice is changing above the arctic circle (potentially changing shipping lanes/traffic). In addition, large amounts of coal and other items (uranium?), etc likely is a draw.
The guy sees what Xi doing in the South China sea and gets jealous. The problem is what China has done has taken decades of building manmade islands that actually have a strategic purpose. In a moments notice, China could shut down sea traffic impacting half the worlds economy. And they have military locations that would let them take control of Taiwan in a matter of days. And there is NOTHING the world could do about it either economically or militarily. We're pretty much all reliant on their goodwill at this point. They spent decades building this capability.
Trump has NO ability to think that far in the future. So he just looks at the low hanging fruit in his sorry attempt to replicate China's ability to exert their dominance. And it's laughable to anyone that understands this. An absolute dime store imperialist.
But guys like Don Jr and his friends in the media will try and convince his followers that taking Greenland means anything from a geoeconomic standpoint. But it doesn't. So if you try and justify it, you just look like a fool to those of us with brain.
China is as reliant on us as we are on them. That is the beauty of trade: it is a great pacifier. If China were to “exert their dominance”, it would cripple them, us and everyone else.
what china or russia would do is begin with trade then have greenland ask for bases.
Donkey Dave, you should read up on the importance of the US Thule/Pituffik military base. It is vital to the US military.
All of you should read up on the strategic economic and military importance of Greenland. You all seem to be tossing out silly and meritless points off the top of your head. Too cold, too far away, etc. Childish, simplistic nonsense.
So the military base is already there?
There is a US military base there, yes. It's called Thule. You should read about it. Be informed.
So why do they need to buy it or invade in order to maintain a position there?
Because the acquisition of Greenland would be of much more importance and provide vastly more economic and military opportunities for America than whatever agreement governs America's use of Thule.

Again, you guys are all asking really stupid and uninformed questions. Some of you don't even seem to know where Greenland is, yet you are in here commenting. Read up on Greenland and its increasing importance in world affairs.
The only thing Dumpsters are going to be doing is sitting on their fat a$ eating doritos and saying vile things. Dumpies have no real policies to implement other than deporting anything that doesn't look white
Greenland could be a fantastic vacation destination for winter experiences and amenities: saunas, hot tubs, hiking, fishing, pole barn games etc. A great way to inspire outdoor winter activity.
re the yokels giddy that mute egede is talking danish independence, i doubt they would want to trade one sugar daddy for another.
and you fail to grasp that if greenland's affiliations go highest bidder we don't necessarily win. china and russia will want in. next thing you know china or russia have bases on greenland. there is an island that is joint danish and canadian. generally it's just a few hundred miles' trip from greenland to canada.
people who chuckle at trump being a russian agent, you couldn't draw it up better. like having missiles in cuba.
oh, and i get that land in the north, if climate change continues, will become valuable as it melts. trump, as typical, is thinking golf courses when he should be worrying about competing bases.
You are being absolutely ridiculous if you think Russia or China is going to have the ability to purchase or lease land for military bases in Greenland. I can't begin to describe how stupid your beliefs are. Back to contrarian school for you, Bozo.
And Denmark could hardly be a "sugar daddy" for Greenland. The US won't be either, although I am absolutely positive that Greenlanders will see the benefits of US citizenship (the most sought after citizenship in the world) when it comes time (later this year) for them to make decisions.

ps don’t bad talk cool ranch Doritos!
You know that you can already go there right? Denmark is a friendly country, and it’s easy to go to the EU on a US passport.

Really? The GDP of Greenland is $3.24 billion. That's about 1/12 the GDP of Vermont. Vermont has the smallest GDP of all of the states.

oh, come on, this is like cubs commentators talking division championships on opening day. this is for consumption. the utter contradiction of a dude who campaigned on warmonger democrats starting his term sabre rattling at friendly governments in canada and greenland. he has zero principles. he just riles people up. the problem is he sometimes acts on his talk. or people act for him. or he destabilizes stuff that was ok before.
he is a sledgehammer swinger at a chess board. he creates chaos. he puts his name in the media all the time. we then have to live with the destabilized outcomes, say, greenland pursues independence then kicks us out for interfering. brings in dear sweet china and russia who didn't threaten to take the place over.
common sense is one makes positive history flipping opposing governments instead of undermining friendly ones. he might as well be working for the bad guys because he has no clue what he's doing but he creates chaos competing powers can use.

The reason China is building islands around the South China Sea is because China is entirely dependent on shipping lanes through the South China Sea to get oil from the Middle East. If China tries to take Taiwan, the US Navy can blockade the shipping lanes and China would run out of oil and gas in about three weeks. China's navy has come a long way since the days of Mao. But it is still inferior to the US pacific fleet and could not break a US blockade. China does play a good long game and is gradually building up its navy with the intention of having the ability to challenge the US superiority and set the stage to retake Taiwan. But that is a long way off.
The strategic significance of Greenland is its rare earth minerals. China has threatened to cut of the US from its rare earth minerals. Opening mining in Greenland could help the US wean itself from dependence on China for rare earth minerals. However, the US doesn't need a to buy or invade Greenland to access its natural resource. There is also oil and gas in Greenland, but absent a lot of warming, it is way cheaper to frack in the US. The other significance of Greenland is control over shipping lanes if the artic ice melts enough to allow a northwest passage through the artic.
also, the same PM being mentioned for independence talk also said re trump, "greenland is not for sale." in other words, not interested in trading whose colony they are.

Amazing how dumb you have to be to defend Trump.
Donkey, I'd bet that if you ever bother to read up about the strategic economic and military importance of Greenland, that whatever sources you consult will have little or no mention of its current GDP. It's just not a number that any informed or intelligent person would consider a factor in this. Greenland's current GDP has almost nothing to do with Greenland's overall economic (or military) value to the US.
You're being really stupid, repeatedly (e.g., "Why do we need access to the Arctic?" "too far from everything" "That base isn't much needed"). But I don't see a way to convince you of that without you doing your own homework first.

Really dodging the point that the US should not invade or threaten to invade an allied country.
If you want to expand Thule airbase, ask Denmark. If you want rare earth minerals, the US has free trade with Denmark.
I wasn't dodging anything, Jackman. I was specifically responding to a very stupid point about Greenland's GDP.
The point about acquiring Denmark is that we will no longer have to ask Denmark or negotiate "free trade" with Denmark or coordinate with Denmark. You get that, correct? You seem to be dodging a discussion of the importance of Greenland and the benefits to America of Greenland being US territory.

The paper contends that Greenland can leverage a nonexistent shipping route through the arctic in exchange for investment in its infrastructure development on the off chance that it can eventually exploit its resources as it is currently an underdeveloped country.
It's a sales pitch for making Greenland a welfare state of the United States.

I genuinely cannot think of any benefits to Greenland being US territory that are not also benefits of Greenland being US-allied territory.
The cost, meanwhile, is that the US will never have an ally again.

Control and profit from the commercialization of the natural resources, for one. I'm sure you can think of others if you genuinely tried.
The cost, meanwhile, is that the US will never have an ally again.
Pretty wild prediction. Exaggerated, extreme, dramatic, and highly unlikely.

Our total imports from Greenland is $39 million in goods (mostly seafood). Our total exports to Greenland is $6 million in goods (mostly cars and electronics).
That's a grand total of $45 million in trade between the two countries.
