No believes a word spouted by the obsessive/compulsive hater. Anyone that angry about a young man's fatal mistake from 50 years ago is clearly sad sack without a meaningful life.
Admittedly that is pretty young to be the unofficial late-race pacer for the real medal contenders in an Olympic Games.
You really don't think a fourth place finisher who was two seconds out of first place wasn't a real medal contender? So by your standard the only medal contenders were the three medalists?
In the 52 years since Prefontaine placed 4th in Munich, no American-born 5,000m runner has placed as high. Highest Olympic finishes: Bob Kennedy - 6th; Galen Rupp - 7th.

I think I'll RUB IT IN. Steve Prefontaine was Edward Cheserek, without the post-college career to expose the fraud.
Ed Cheserek just ran a 2:05 marathon, if he was American his career would look very different.
I can't tell what's funnier, the dozens of bot-likes for pro-Pre posts, or people thinking that 2:05 legitimized "King" Cheserek.
The world record is 2 flat. He's king of absolutely nothing. It would be good for an American but he is a Kenyhan. The issue here is people were so sure Cheserek would be a world beater, just as they were with Prefontaine, because he was the golden child at Oregon.
I'll rub it in some more - Oregon got all its glory by grabbing all the best recruits, as NCAA rules freely permit. But glory is fleeting. Great recruits don't usually become great global elites, and recruiting dynasties end. Look at the Ducks now! Back to the Dellinger years at best.
Wasn’t this a big flaw in the McGovern campaign? Proposing stuff like UBI to give everyone stuff for free. And so he was attacked as a socialist. And yes, every Democrat gets called a socialist but it stuck to him more because of his actual policy proposals. Also, the amnesty, acid and abortion line.

There's a lot of similarities between McGovern 1972 and Harris 2024. Each got a very late start in August (McGovern due to the convention date and the subsequent disaster with VP-nominee Thomas Eagleton's withdrawal and time needed to find his replacement, Sargent Shriver) and benefited from internecine party political squabbles (McGovern helped design the primary system and used his knowledge to his advantage; Harris was the sitting VP and benefited from Biden's anger at Pelosi by getting his immediate endorsement before the party could respond to his resignation with a short-primary/convention month). They both sold out the more radical elements of the party - the NOW coalition and removing abortion rights from the 1972 Dem platform and Harris refusing to give the Free Palestine and Trans activists a spot at the convention and in the campaign). They both lost badly due to the above mentioned issues and the resulting apathy from disaffected party members vs a right-wing political figure who mobilized younger conservatives, seniors and reactionaries into a bulletproof coalition.
4th in the 5000m at 21 in Munich behind a blood doper ain't too shabby after going for the win and getting physically pushed back by him on the last turn.
Still wondering which part I am supposed to be jealous about.
You are an arrogant prick. You don’t need to admit the jealousy. It emanates from every word you compose. If you are indeed a 50 something year old man who is getting off on trashing Prefontaine, you have failed at life. Your 3 houses are impressing nobody.

A mistake by a 24-yo is to be overlooked by this board, but this board sure loves to continually bash a 16-yo for a mistake many years later. It takes a special kind of loser ...
