W 5000 loaded with all but McCabe and May from the top 10 in Wisconsin plus a number of others including the now pro Venters. McCabe and May in the 3000 with Aaylidiz and a few BYU runners.
Seeing Hertenstein entered in the 3 rather than the 5 (15:10 PB) makes me wonder if she's considering a return to the steeple--an event she hasn't fooled with since 2019. I'm unsure what to expect following a 15:32 road 5k a month ago, but the ex-Buff (now working with Pete Julian?) should destroy her 3k PB from 2021 (9:19). If she's sharp, her kick could surprise some of the collegians up front. Seems reasonable to expect Appleton and Flockhart to also dip under 9 min for the first time. Maybe Tait as well.
OKSt's Musau and Schoppe placed second and fourth in the Dec 3k last year and will try to fend off Wolfe for a 1-2 Cowboy finish on Sat. Abdalla, Strand and UVA's Martin should follow strong XC seasons with PBs, possibly just below 7:40.
Looking into how the "scores" were determined, it isn't consistent how the various races are weighed. For example, Graham Blanks has only 2 performances that make up his score: his Pre-Nats (6.2 weight) and NCAA XC finals (8.1 weight). Habtom Samuel has 3 performances contributing towards his score, but it doesn't include the NCAA XC final as any of them, even though the XC final had the greatest "weight" (it includes Pre-Nats [6.2 weight], his conference final [4.9 weight], and an outdoor 5,000m track result [5 weight]). Meanwhile, Brian Masau's score is based on the NCAA XC final, his conference final (5.6 weight), and the same outdoor track 5000m as Samuel.
But hey, I guess that's why we run the race.
Lacctic ranking get it wrong with Blanks every single time. They had him basically in the same position last year. Either there is a flaw in calculations or there isn’t a category for grit

I think both are true - the calculation is flawed, and there isn't a category for grit (but how would you quantify grit though? so it makes sense it wouldn't be part of it)

Lacctic rating just averages the fastest performance (ignoring importance) and the fastest race in a group of more important races. If a track race is particularly fast, it adds that in as well. I think it says this on the "about" and "faq" section:

I think its the "grit". Lacctic rankings are like seed times. Blanks has run slower on the track, and may not have had the fastest seed going in, but is a stronger racer when it counts at nationals. Also didn't Habtom Samuel lose a shoe?

Is this because he didn’t run a full season of track? Does he not get credit for Olympic trials or both rounds of the Olympic 5k? he has run the fastest 5k time of everyone on the list and is ranked 7th after beating everyone on that list in the NCAAs? who knows.

Running a 3000 on Dec 7 2024 has nothing to do with a steeple decision. It's one race and only a season opening rust buster.
She just ran a 10k turkey trot, does that mean she is moving up to 10000?
She cooked dinner for friends recently...so she must be quitting running to be a Chef?

No, he didn’t get credit for running the Olympic trials and Olympic 5k because those results aren’t on TFRRS and therefore are not automatically uploaded into the system.
lacctic isn’t trying to predict wins — it’s giving a summary of performances for the season that should be correlated with wins. The reality is that everyone in the top 10 was laying down similar-level performances all season, but Graham had more when it counted. Habtom’s shoe was also bloodily ripped off his foot at 5k which probably slowed him down relative to his shod performances.
Unless people directly ask me, I don’t manually update out-of-season track performances. I have a day job. Lacctic is just a program that I run on my laptop for fun.
In the W3000, it'll be interesting to see who keeps pace with Hertenstein, Kazimierska and McCabe in the final 400m. More strong racing in Heat 2, though I couldn't pick a favourite.
Weirdly, Nathan Green's two previous 3Ks were DNFs. Can the UWash speedster 1) finish this one, and 2) hang with Abdalla, Martin, new pro Waskom and the Tar Heels?

Men's 3k is the race were a new CR is most likely.
7:36 -- from Drew Bosley, of all runners -- seems the most vulnerable.
Maybe Lemengole and Blanks can get the 5k records but not counting on it.
Note: Nico's 12:57 is only 8 seconds off Bekele's WR.
