In my experience it is. Before, Twitter seemed to be a place where your speech was only as free as others deemed it popular or unpopular.
I believe Twitter is much more free under musk. I don't agree with musk supporting trump, but I do think he's made twitter better.
Musk censors accounts that aren't pro-Trump. I had one main account and a backup, got a notification on Nov 6 that both were banned. Literally all I ever posted were quotes from Trump about the economy, and links to the corresponding stats showing how badly he was lying.

As a former auditor of Twitter, both SOX and FTC compliance, I can't agree with you on this one. I've been on TwiXtter since 2008, and it is a hellhole of 4-Chan proportions today. Advertisers mostly come from the RSBN right-wing QVC type of companies, the blue checkmarks are almost all reactionary types who pile on any type of opinion that differs from theirs to clog up your feed, and the posts linked to trending topics get hijacked by them even worse than normal posts. Content moderation is done willy nilly and death threats, doxxing and other personal attacks stay up for a long time or never get taken down. The bot activity is horrendous, with almost any post that gets engagements filled with pr0n bot replies. I've finally migrated to Threads, which sucks but has a lot of former TwiXtter people, and Bluesky, which is improving rapidly and has a powerful block function that removes the bot incentives (as well as no advertising).
My favorite thing about TwiXtter is that I have a grandfathered-in 'yellow checkmark', which drives some people insane since they can't get it and can't understand why I have it since I'm obviously not an organization. I've been reported numerous times and for some reason (incompetence), the company has yet to take it away from me.
Who bets Elon paid for a lot of the bot promotion? Follower numbers just took a nosedive after all the bots went to rest after the election, right?
I wouldn't read twitter any more than I would read Fox or Pravda.
There are a hundred free world media outlets one can consume--one does not need to read anything from any of those silly propaganda outlets.
Pick any media from any democracy, and then read a few others, and you can almost instantly see how they differ from Russian or Fox propaganda dramatically.

This is a lie. X has true free speech and little censorship now.

Twitter used to be where you could have cool conversations about nerdy things like math, running, science, games, etc. Now its just a bunch of political activists (on both sides) yelling at their fan base about how bad the other one is. Sure your speach is free, but its not fun anymore. Its become even less fun than Linkedin, and thats a social network based on the boring topic of resume sharing and job listings.
Better, meh. There is less censorship so more opinions can flourish both extreme and otherwise. Ide rather have everything out there and just not read/agree with what I want than have someone pulling the strings in the shadows.
Anyone who says there is just as much censorship as there was before he bought it are delusional. TRUMP, a US President was banned from twitter. Tons of right wing stuff was being suppressed and banned. Now there are millions of accounts that are extreme left/anti Elon that are not banned. Elon has gotten community noted on his own posts. Whether you like it or not there is definitely more free speech.
Based on stock prices it’s worse. Based on user experience it’s worse. It seems like a place where Musk can act like an antagonistic teenager. I have no agenda, but he acts like a clown. It’s a shame that one of the top businessmen in the world chooses to act like that.

"Free speech" doesn't matter if there is someone (Elon) with their thumbs on the dials determining which information shows up in people's feeds, and you'd have to be delusional to think that he isn't heavily promoting right wing content on there.
We need neutral platforms and algorithms, it doesn't matter if you can technically say what you want on a heavily biased platform.

People today are confusing classic liberalism and being right-wing. I think this is because the left has been slowly infiltrated with illiberal ideas (focus on censorship via fighting "disinformation," elevating feelings and quasi-spiritual ideas above rationality and truth, calling for unequal treatment based on race/sex/gender in the name of equality). In short, a soft totalitarian atmosphere has taken hold of some factions of the left, but they couch this control in appeals to safety and social justice and smear anybody who disagrees with them as Nazis. There is, of course, an illiberal faction on the right, but they don't currently control over 90% of the media. The left does. Twitter is the only major non-left media outlet.
Elon is a bit of a troll, but he's also a classic liberal, not a right-winger. He has erratic temper tantrums, but that's probably because he's on the autism spectrum.
When musk bought Twitter one of his primary objectives was to "authenticate everyone", in other words he would fix the issue with bots and fake accounts.
Well all he did to address this was adding a fancy blue check for $, I bet that was super hard work!
Turns out the data shows the issue has gotten much worse, nearly 40% of posts come from bots now.

Hard disagree.
I have been on Twitter since 2007, and have seen all sorts of 'unpopular' opinions getting plenty of attention. That was always one of the great things about it -- even uncommon positions and interests could find an audience.
Unless you were posting outright porn or hate speech, not many things really got deleted during those 15 years.
Musk seemed to obsess about a few edge cases, like borderline violent racist posts being deleted, and users who repeatedly dealt in that material being suspended. Since most users were never there for porn or hate speech, only a tiny minority of users other than him ever cared.
Under Musk, the garbage has really become harder to avoid. Porn-related bots reply to any post with high engagement, which as someone with a decent following (8k) makes using the platform annoying to gross.
Apparently he deletes journalists who post things he doesn't like, which seems like the opposite of making it "more free."
